On Wednesday, as the Supreme Court of India granted interim bail to senior journalist Arnab Goswami, liberals across the country went through an insufferable meltdown, and leading the charge of breaking down on the prospect of seeing Arnab as a free citizen once again was alleged comedian Kunal Kamra, who passed outrageously distasteful comments against the apex court and its judges. Whether Kunal Kamra put out the highly contemptuous tweets under some kind of influence is not yet clear, but will soon be ascertained, as the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal has granted nod to a Mumbai-based lawyer to initiate contempt proceedings against the far-left specimen.
For his misadventures and behaviour befitting only a mental degenerate, Kunal Kamra now stares at the prospect of being judged guilty of criminal contempt. As a person who was deriving sadistic pleasure seeing Goswami being hounded by the Maharashtra government, at whose feet the alleged comedian lies prostrate, Kamra put out a series of tweets which prima facie have come out as statements aimed at raising questions about the autonomy of the top court, while also attributing certain motivations to the apex court judges, who do not take decisions fairly.
The Supreme Court of this country is the the most Supreme joke of this country…

The pace at which the Supreme Court operates in matters of “National Interests” it’s time we replace Mahatma Gandhi’s photo with Harish Salve’s photo…

DY Chandrachud is a flight attendant serving champagne to first class passengers after they’re fast tracked through, while commoners don’t know if they’ll ever be boarded or seated, let alone served.

All lawyers with a spine must stop the use of the prefix “Hon’ble” while referring to the Supreme Court or its judges. Honour has left the building long back…

Subsequent to Kamra putting on naked display his asinine self, a Mumbai-based lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee had sought Attorney General KK Venugopal’s permission to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Kunal Kamra. In his letter to the AG, Siddiquee said that Kamra posted unsavoury comments regarding the Supreme Court and Justice DY Chandrachud in particular. He also circulated a morphed image of the Supreme Court premises, which was shown in a saffron hue, with the tricolour replaced with BJP’s flag. Siddiquee had said that the comedian’s tweets amount to a “manifest attempt to lower the authority of the Supreme Court of India.”
The AG almost instantly granted nod to Siddiquee to go ahead and initiate contempt proceedings against Kunal Kamra. As for Kamra referring to the Supreme Court as the ‘Supreme Joke’, the Attorney General termed the same as “highly objectionable”. In his consent letter, KK Venugopal added that the other tweets were highly objectionable as well and it would perhaps be for the court to decide the question as to whether these tweets also would constitute criminal contempt of the Supreme Court of India.

“This is a gross insinuation against the entirety of the Supreme Court that it is not an independent & impartial institution & so too its judges, but on the other hand is a court of the ruling party, the BJP, existing only for BJP’s benefit,” the letter by the AG read. In a warning to others as well, it added, “I believe it is time people understand that attacking the Supreme Court of India unjustifiedly and brazenly will attract punishment under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971.”
Strong action against Kunal Kamra and his ilk was the need of the hour. For far too long, such elements have been allowed to go scot-free for continuous trespasses. An example must be set of Kamra, so that individuals of his breed realise that lying through their teeth about the sovereignty and integrity of the Supreme Court of India will not go unpunished.
