Policies directly affect citizens and in democracies citizen make governments. Shouldn’t they have an active say in how the policies of the government should be? On the occasion of the 70th birthday of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Shri SA Ramdass ji, MLA from KR Legislative Assembly, Mysore, pioneered a citizen engagement drive called ‘Age of Ideas’ with the exact same motive – involved the citizenry of the nation in the policymaking process. Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has initiated many policies and schemes in the public interest which have brought positive changes in the lives of crores of people. But there is no plan that does not have room for improvement.
Through the Age of Ideas movement, citizens were invited to participate in the policy making process of the country.

The ideas of the ten winning participants of this drive which will go on for 45 days, will reach the Prime Minister’s office directly and additionally the winners will also walk away with handsome cash prizes. While the contestant securing the first prize will walk away with Rs. 50,000, a total cash prize of Rs 2,75,000 is up for grabs.
A jury of 10 members consisting of prominent voices from varying fields were finalized to select ten best ideas out of all the ideas that came out of this drive, which runs till 31 October.

The esteemed jury members had extensive conversations over two sessions moderated by Sh. Ajay Kashyap. The first session that took place on 6th of October was attended by Atul Mishra, Shubhangi Sharma, Vikas Pandey and Rahul Chaudhary while Dhaval Patel couldn’t be a part of it because of some family emergencies.

The 4 panelists along with the moderators talked about the need to engage the public at large in the policymaking process. Rahul Chaudhary familiarized the viewers with the fine details of policy making and how it affects one and all. He talked at length about the implications of policies and how one badly conceived policy harms everyone in the long run. Vikas Pandey gave a more practical explanation of the process as he analyzed the ground realities of various Modi Gov policies and talked about the goods and bads of each one of them. He even went on to suggest some bold initiatives. Shubhangi Sharma, talked about Modi government policies in general and those concerning women in specific. She highlighted how the Modi government unabashedly talks about menstrual hygiene and similar subjects that previous governments didn’t even talk about. Atul Mishra, in his free-flowing speech, riddled with some hilarious and many inspiring anecdotes likened this movement as the Dev Danav Samudra Manthan. The great churning of the ocean of Ideas will produce many riches for us, he opined. With over 21,000 Live views on Facebook, the first edition of the brainstorming session between the panelists was a massive success.

The second session took place on 9th of October and was attended by Nupur Sharma, Harsh Madhusudan, Ajit Datta, Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga and Dr. Jigar Inamdar. The talk was moderated by Ajay Kashyap. The 5 panelists delved into the fine details of policymaking process. Dr. Inamdar shared his experience from the various he held in his long and illustrious career and brought many backstories from his home state of Gujarat and explained how Public policies have affected people at large. Harsh Madhusudan, the economist in the group presented an economist’s viewpoint of the policies and their implications. Acclaimed columnist Ajit Datta talked about the need to engage citizens in the process and even urged people to participate in the churning with all their heart and soul. He, being the youngest in the group, echoed the voices of countless youth who look up to the PM for employment, skills and other youth centric policies. Tajinder Bagga talked extensively about the recently released Agri bills and the kind of impact they are having at the ground level. He shared his recent experience with farmers in Haryana. Nupur Sharma, donned her spokesperson hat and talked extensively about many government policies. She explained how the government has been incorporating suggestions from public intellectuals, authors, economists and common people to make the policies better.
