In what comes as yet another shocking development from West Bengal, BJP MLA Debendra Nath Ray was found hanging outside a closed mobile shop at Balia, Deben More in Raigunj in North Dinajpur district this morning. The spot happens to be one kilometre away from his residence. Ray was the BJP’s MLA from Hemtabad, North Dinajpur district of West Bengal. The suspected murder of a BJP party man, no less than an MLA himself, has once again exposed the absolute freedom which has been given to political adversaries of the BJP to indulge in rampant political killings in the TMC-ruled state.
It is more than evident that this was no suicide, but a cold-blooded murder. Debendra Nath Ray was found hanging right beside a pole. Had he been alive while hanging, or while experiencing asphyxiation, the pole would serve as an immediate support, and hence, to many, this neither looks like a suicide nor a death by hanging. On similar lines, family members of the slain BJP MLA have openly claimed that he was killed prior to being hanged. People of the area also claimed that the BJP MLA was murdered and then hanged. However, police said the cause of death will be ascertained only after the post mortem. The body has been sent to Raigunj hospital for post mortem.

Police have also found a suicide note from the pockets of the MLA, allegedly planted by his killers. What’s worse, the police have not revealed the two names which have been mentioned in the supposedly fake note. This is not the first time that a BJP worker has been hanged, after being killed in West Bengal. While the killing of the BJP MLA is indeed shocking, it has come as a surprise to none.
The latest suspected murder though, is a clear message to workers of the saffron party in West Bengal. If a BJP MLA can be killed in the state, absolutely no worker of the party is safe, and is living on borrowed time.
This is also a direct message to the BJP supporters that if their leaders can’t protect themselves, how would they protect the voters and supporters?
Grassroot workers of the saffron party have been a prime target in the state of West Bengal, since the opposing parties are well aware that it is the BJP’s ground force that wins elections for the party. As such, there has been a consistent extermination of local BJP workers in West Bengal, the flow of which was hindered by the CoVID-19 lockdown. With the country now in Unlock mode, the political adversaries of the BJP have allegedly unlocked its killer mode too, under the Mamata Banerjee regime which is fast losing ground to the BJP.
BJP President JP Nadda, while condemning the suspected murder of Debendra Nath Ray, said, “The suspected heinous killing of Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad in West Bengal, is extremely shocking and deplorable. This speaks of the Gunda Raj and failure of law and order in the Mamata government.”

In the year preceding PM Modi’s second oath-taking ceremony, close to 80 workers of the BJP were killed in West Bengal. For the oath ceremony in 2019, the BJP had invited the family members of 42 slain workers, in what was a symbolic message to TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee. What is worrying, however, is that the BJP is taking no constructive action against the killing of its own people, who are being exterminated for fighting for the saffron party’s cause.

The BJP cannot waste another day, and must initiate a brutal crackdown on those mercilessly indulging in political killings in the state. Why wait till 2021, in the of forming the government in the state? The lives of BJP workers should not come cheap, and perpetrators of such crimes must be brought to justice immediately, even if that means dismissing Mamata Banerjee’s government.
