Sunny Deol rescues woman sold to a Pakistani man in Kuwait

Sunny Deol, the actor turned politician, who was recently elected from Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab has made the headlines, and for all the right reasons. Proactively dealing with a human trafficking case, Sunny Deol has rescued a 45-year-old woman who was sold to a Pakistani man in Kuwait.

Veena Bedi was lured by a travel agent to Kuwait on the promise of a housekeeping job of Rs 30,000 per month, but instead was sold to a Pakistani man. She was kept in confinement in Kuwait and was subjected to harassment and assault.

During Deol’s visit to Kartarpur corridor, he was notified of the situation through the victim’s family who requested him to take action. Wasting no time, Sunny Deol took matters into his own and got in touch with the External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi. After a rigorous procedure, was brought back home to Gurdaspur, on 26h July.

Along with Sunny Deol, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and two NGOs, one based in Kuwait and the other, operating from Canada, also helped in the rescue mission. 

Along with the citizens in his constituency, even Deol’s father, actor Dharmendra is extremely proud of his son. He tweeted, “Treat your job as your responsibility, son. God bless you.”

Responding to the congratulatory and encouraging messages, he also tweeted, “Dear friends, thanks a lot for your encouraging comments for sunny. He will do his best for Gurdaspur. A worried father.”

A few days after the safe return, Sunny Deol met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to thank him for Ministry of External Affairs’ quick intervention which had resulted in safe release of Veena Bedi from Kuwait. 

Veena Bedi is now safe and the family couldn’t be happier. Blatant cases of human trafficking are on the rise and many such immoral men, masquerading as travel agents lure women away to the Middle Eastern countries at the pretext of providing a job, with lucrative salaries. The women in this age group, hoping for a better economic future often get charmed by these promises. Most of the times, such incidents lead to the unthinkable and there on it becomes very difficult for the country to locate the whereabouts of the trafficked women. 

According to the 2017 report by the International Labour Organization, 40.3 million people have been subjected to human trafficking globally. This is a disheartening figure, and to see the elected representatives, doing everything in their power to curb this menace is heart-warming.
