After being granted bail in a defamation case in Patna, Rahul Gandhi was seen savouring a dosa at a local restaurant, however, looking at a number of similar cases filed against the Congress leader this dosa is surely not the last he would have to savour after such hearings. Over the past few years, a number of similar cases under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of IPC has been filed against the Gandhi scion.

Bhiwandi- Defamation case filed for remarks made on RSS and assassination of Mahatma Gandhi
On 6th of March 2014, a local RSS worker, Rajesh Kunte filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi for his speech in Bhiwandi in which Rahul Gandhi had allegedly suggested that RSS workers had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. Taking note of Kunte’s complaint, The magistrate court on 11th July 2014 summoned Mr. Gandhi to face trial however after failing to get the case against him quashed in Bombay High Court, Rahul Gandhi even knocked on Supreme Court’s door but later withdrew his petition. The magistrate charged Gandhi under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code. Rahul Gandhi had appeared in the same court for several hearings over the past few years. The court has summoned Rahul Gandhi asking him to appear before it on October 7.
Guwahati- Defamation case filed for suggesting RSS workers had stopped him from entering the Satra(Vaishnavite monastery)
A local RSS volunteer Anjan Kumar Bora had filed a case against Rahul Gandhi with regard to his visit to a 16th-century Vaishnavite monastery in the state in December. Rahul Gandhi on his visit to Barpeta Satra, a 16th-century Vaishnavite monastery had reportedly gone directly to a Congress’ roadshow without entering the Satra. Later in New Delhi Rahul Gandhi had alleged that RSS workers had stopped him from entering the Satra. He also alleged that the RSS incited local women and placed them at the gate of the Satra to block his entry. After appearing before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Kamrup (M), Rahul Gandhi was allowed to go after putting up a Persol Recognisance (PR) bond of Rs 50,000.
Mumbai- Defamation case filed for remarks made on RSS and murder of Gauri Lankesh
On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi appeared before the Mazgaon metropolitan magistrate’s court regarding a defamation case filed against him by Dhrutiman Joshi, a lawyer and worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Dhrutiman Joshi had alleged that within 24 hours of her death, Rahul Gandhi told reporters that “anybody who speaks against the ideology of the BJP, against the ideology of the RSS, is pressured, beaten, attacked and even killed.” Rahul Gandhi pleaded “not guilty” and was granted bail on a surety of Rs.15,000. Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M) has also pleaded not guilty in the same case.
Patna- Defamation case filed for remarks made on Modi Community
Rahul Gandhi had to face multiple defamation cases over his alleged remarks on the Modi community. While addressing a rally in Karnataka Rahul Gandhi had allegedly made defamatory statements regarding the Modi community and said that all thieves had the surname Modi — referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, bank-fraud accused Nirav Modi and former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi. He said this while attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Bihar Dy. CM Sushil Kumar Modi had filed a defamation case against him in Patna for which Rahul Gandhi was granted bail on a surety of Rs 10,000 on Saturday. Similar defamation cases against Rahul Gandhi have been filed for his alleged remarks against Modi community in Ranchi, Surat, and Bhopal.
Ahmedabad- Defamation case filed for remarks made on Amit Shah
This defamation case was filed by Krishnavadan Brahmbhatt, a BJP corporator from the city’s Khadia ward, who contended that the former Congress chief’s terming of Amit Shah a “murder accused” at the rally was defamatory as well as false “because Amit Shah had been discharged honourably by the CBI court in January 2015” in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case. Issuing the summons, Metropolitan Magistrate D.S. Dabhi has fixed the next hearing on July 9. Criminal defamation suits have also been filed against Rahul Gandhi by the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank and its chairman Ajay Patel for his allegations claiming bank’s involvement in a “scam” to convert scrapped notes worth Rs 745.59 crore within five days of demonetisation announcement.
Along with a number of defamation cases, Rahul Gandhi is also looking ahead at more serious charges in the National Herald case where he has been booked under section 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) with section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
