Once you come out of the theatre, you shall ask the same question after watching this movie – What was this?
Directed by Prakash Kovelamudi, Judgemental Hai Kya has Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles, supported by actors like Amrita Puri, Hussein Dalal, Lalit Bahl, Amyra Dastur, Jimmy Shergill, Satish Kaushik, etc..
Plot –
The story is centered around Bobby Grewal Batliwala, who is mentally traumatized to a tragic incident from her childhood. According to the doctors, she suffers from acute psychosis. In order to support herself, Bobby does the job of a dubbing artist and is so influenced by the characters that she starts living their lives. Bobby’s life takes an interesting turn when Keshav (Rajkummar Rao) and Reema (Amyra Dastur) come to her house as tenants.
Bobby is unable to digest their picture-perfect love story and she smells something fishy. Her doubts intensify when due to an unfortunate accident, Reema is killed. However, since Bobby is mentally disturbed, nobody wants to believe in her tale. How does Bobby prove her point and what is the real reason behind Reema’s death, forms the crux of the story.
What’s Good –
Before going ahead with my review, let me tell you beforehand that this film is not everyone’s cup of tea. The film’s plot is bound to leave many people dumbstruck at various places. One of the most endearing qualities of this film is the sensitive portrayal of the mentally disturbed people. Though it may not be perfect, Judgemental Hai Kya is at least an honest effort in the right direction.
What’s Awesome –
If we talk about the acting, the film is entirely devoted to Kangana and Rajkummar. Kangana has infused life into the complex role of a mentally traumatized woman with finesse. Be it the uncomfortable attitude of Bobby, or her weird antics, Kangana has portrayed every detail in her own quirky style. On the other hand, in the role of Keshav, Rajkummar Rao has proved why people go crazy over his style of acting. His acting during the climax shall leave you spellbound for sure.
In an important role, Amrita Puri also does justice to her role, though her role could’ve been expanded better. This is not all, screenwriter Kanika Dhillon herself comes forward in a small but crucial role in order to set the stage for an important sequence in the film. The dialogue delivery of actors like Hussein Dalal, Satish Kaushik and Brijendra Kala shall leave you in splits as well. The movie also includes an analogy to an important religious tale that will leave you impressed by the sheer execution of the same.
What could’ve been better –
However, this film is not without its flaws. Though the first half of this film is engaging, a few scenes make the second half drag a bit until the climax. Satish Kaushik and Jimmy Shergill had a golden opportunity to make their presence felt with their roles but fell prey to the small screentime given to their characters. Amyra Dastur’s role wasn’t much diverse as well.
Despite the flaws, Judgemental Hai Kya is a unique and brave effort to portray the day to day lives of the mentally traumatized people. If you want to see something new and unique and expect something different in terms of content, this film is definitely for you. For me, Judgemental Hai Kya should get 3/5 stars.
