JNU receives proposal to set up a Savarkar centre

JNU, Savarkar, centre

JNU has received a proposal for setting up a centre on Savarkar where students and scholars can study his views on Hindutva, politics among others. The Savarkar Adhyasan Centre is in talks with the JNU authorities for setting up a center.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was a freedom fighter who was at the forefront of popularizing Hindutva. He was also given the credit to propagate the idea of keeping the “Hindu” identity intact within the essence of Bharat. He was the founder of the Abhinav Bharat Society and the Free Indian Society.

The centre would help the students study about the views, political thoughts and social role of Savarkar. It would also enrich students about the idea of Hindutva and why it is important to preserve it in the country. The proposal was sent to the varsity and is in the final stage of negotiation. This proposal has been put forward by the Savarkar Rashtriya Smarak and Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The President of Smarak Ranjit Savarkar said that though the older generation is aware of him it is important for the new generation to know about him. They should know who Savarkar is and what his ideologies were. They should also know what contributions he had in the freedom struggle of India.

The President has also said that the setting up of Adhyasan centre will be initiated. The suggestion was proposed after a positive response of students on the play “Mritunjay”. It is a play that speaks about his life and was held in JNU on March 14th

There will be various courses like PhD, MPhil, SET and NET that the students can do on Savarkar at the centre. This is a step to let the new generation learn about various aspects of Savarkar and his ways of life. It will help the generation know why it is important to learn about the Hindutva ideologies and also work towards preserving it in the country.

As we know that JNU has always been a polar left campus, an introduction of Savarkar centre would instill diversity in the campus. The idea behind setting up the centre is expected to be opposed by the left organisation in the JNU campus. The propagations of another wing thoughts and ideologies will help JNU have a more diverse group of people. It will help break the polarised arrangement of the university. Such initiative was also introduced Pune University. It is being done to strike the right balance in the campus.
