The Congress has been constantly touching new lows even as it has been indulging in politicization of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. In yet another low for the grand old party, Imran Khan led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has tweeted a speech by Congress spokesperson, Manish Tewari in order to target PM Modi and spread anti-India propaganda on the issue of Kashmir. It must be noted that PTI is currently in power (at least on paper) in Pakistan.

It is absolutely shameful that at a time when Congress should stand firmly with India, it is making unnecessary political remarks and giving fodder to Pakistan. In what displays the opportunistic and irresponsible character of the Congress, it went on to make highly objectionable remarks about India’s participation in the OIC foreign ministers’ meet. The Congress claimed that it was a “diplomatic faux pas” and claimed that the OIC resolution on Kashmir had labeled India a “terrorist state”. Congress even went on to claim that the OIC resolution was an insult for India. Tewari went on to comment, “We cannot even call it a snub. It is more than a snub; it’s a slap on the face.”

The Congress spokesperson also opined that the OIC resolution had labeled India an occupier in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. In a bid to criticise the BJP, Manish Tewari read out the part of the OIC resolution which stated which condemned “Indian terrorism” in “occupied Jammu & Kashmir” that resulted in the death of 48 people in the state in the month of November 2018. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, led by the Pakistan PM tweeted, “Calling a spade a spade, and recognition of Indian atrocities in Kashmir as “terrorism” by the OIC leads opposition parties in India to question #WarMongerModi; “can we not take care of the people of Kashmir” is the question asked with a mounting death toll in the valley.” Pakistan is clearly trying to ensure that the statement made by the Congress spokesperson is used in order to spread vicious and negative propaganda against India over the issue of Kashmir. The Congress Party must apologise to the nation for giving unnecessary fodder to Pakistan and its political outfits in order to target India.

Congress has been in power in India for several decades. And therefore, it is imperative that the grand old party understands subjects such as international relations and diplomacy. These are complex issues which should not be made a subject of the political blame game. Things like national interest and security should never be politicised in such a careless and casual manner. Manish Tewari made this statement in order to target PM Modi and the present government. However, he must realise that in the process of doing so, he should not give Pakistan the opportunity to spread negative propaganda about India.
