Once an anti-corruption crusader, Kejriwal now pleads Congress for an alliance

Congress, Kejriwal, Alliance

In what exposes the hypocrisy of Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, he has said that AAP leaders are tired of trying to convince the Congress for an alliance with the party. He went on to the extent of asserting that if the Congress and AAP were to form an alliance, then such an arrangement would lead to the BJP losing all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. He said this while giving a speech near Jama Masjid. The Delhi CM said, “We are tired of convincing the Congress to form an alliance, but they do not understand. If there is an alliance, the BJP will lose all the seven Lok Sabha seats it currently has in Delhi.”

Kejriwal seems to be concerned about division of votes between the Congress and the AAP benefitting the BJP, in case an alliance does not materialise between the Congress and his party. Speaking about the grand old party, he said, ” I dont know what they have in their minds.” Kejriwal also drew a comparison with the SP-BSP coalition in the state of Uttar Pradesh even as the AAP National Convenor seemed desperate to somehow convince the Rahul Gandhi-led party into forming an alliance with the AAP.

It is important to mention here that earlier this month Kejriwal had told reporters that the Congress had almost ruled out an alliance with the AAP. The way Kejriwal seems to have been pleading for an alliance with the party and his upset reaction on being allegedly ignored by them give evidence of his desperation to join hands with the Congress. In the process of trying to prevent the division of votes between the Congress and his own party, Kejriwal doesn’t realise that his own popularity has taken a beating.

The fact that Kejriwal is literally pleading for a coalition with the grand old party does not augur well for his own image. It seems that he has already forgotten that the brand Kejriwal was almost totally based on the idea of combating corruption. In fact, his rise as a politician was preceded by an anti-corruption movement. At that time, Kejriwal had mercilessly criticised the then Congress-led UPA government over the issue of corruption.

It is interesting to take a look at one of Kejriwal’s tweets dated November 16, 2012. It states, “Agar CAG na hota toh Congress desh ko abhi tak bech chuki hoti (If the CAG had not been there, the Congress would have sold off India by now).” At that time Kejriwal quickly rose in eminence because he was seen as someone who would never compromise on his fight against corruption. Today, Kejriwal is pleading the grand old party to form an alliance with him. He wants to bring the same Congress to power, which he had once accused of selling the country. This is as hypocritical as it could get.

The way Kejriwal has shown utter disappointment over not forming the alliance exposes him as a shameless politician who has failed to deliver on the promise with which he started his political career. Kejriwal not only looks like a hypocrite but also an unpopular leader. A leader with whom even a sinking ship like the Congress does not want to join hands.
