The Congress is stooping to new lows in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. This time around Congress leader, Kapil Sibal has extended a threat to government officials. He warned all government officials showing excessive “loyalty” towards PM Modi and said that the grand old party is going to keep an eye on them. He said, while addressing the media, “Officials should know that elections come and go, sometimes we are in Opposition and sometimes we are the ruling party. We will keep an eye on all government officials who are over enthusiastic and are trying to show loyalty to the PM. They should remember that Constitution is bigger than anything.”
Not only this, Kapil Sibal categorically criticised CAG Rajiv Mehrishi over the Rafale deal and said, “Rafale deal happened during Rajiv Mehrishi’s tenure as the finance secretary. Since it’s a corrupt deal, probe should be done, but how will the CAG investigate against himself? First he will shield himself and then the government. This is conflict of interest.”
It is disgusting how the Congress is openly resorting to threats in order to stifle the government officials even as the Lok Sabha elections are around the corner. It must be kept in mind that such a threat has been made after Chidambaram was questioned by the ED in connection with the INX Media case and the son-in-law of the Gandhi family was also questioned for over 9 hours in connection with a money laundering case. It seems that this veiled threat has been directed at the officials discharging their duties and probing these cases. The grand old party seems to be resorting to shameful tactics and openly threatening retribution against government officials who are only discharging their duties.
However, it is not for the first time that a Congress leader has made such a shameful remark. Last year, another Congress leader, Abhishek Manu Singhvi had also made a similar remark threatening government officials. According to ANI, Singhvi had said that government officials should remember that time and election results, both change. He had said that an election result was going to be announced on December 11, 2018 and another poll result was scheduled for next year, i.e. 2019. Therefore, Abhishek Singhvi referred to the results of the assembly elections in 5 states as well as to the Lok Sabha poll results next year. He suggested or rather warned that the officials who hold important departments should remind their political masters that there should be restraint and discipline because time is never the same. This was a blatant threat with a motive to force government officials to exercise restraint. It cannot be a mere coincidence that at that time, such a remark was made by Singhvi after ED had carried out raids at multiple places linked to Robert Vadra which had drawn a massive protest from the grand old party which accused the government of political vendetta, and now Kapil Sibal extended a threat to government officials even as Vadra and former Finance Minister, Chidambaram have been questioned in different cases.
It is clear that the grand old party is unable to tolerate how the Modi government came to power in 2014 and is also ensuring that proper investigation takes place in cases involving suspicious transactions. As a result of frustration arising from this reason, the Congress leaders are making such shameful and irresponsible remarks.
