Why India chose to strike at Balakot in Pakistan

IAF, Balakot

India has struck hard and deep into the Pakistani territory in order to avenge the Pulwama terror attack. In an unprecedented move, IAF fighter jets went deep into the Pakistani territory and bombed the Pakistani terror camps heavily. IAF fighter jets had reportedly dropped 1,000 kg bombs in Pakistan which indicates that it was a really massive attack on the Pakistani terror outfits.

One of the targets where the airstrikes took place was Balakot in Pakistan which is 50 kilometres from the Line of Control (LoC). Balakot is a major target and the IAF has therefore hit Pakistan where it hurts the most. It is the hotbed of the Pakistani terror establishment. In fact, it is situated just 62.5 kilometres from Abbottabad where the US had killed Osama Bin Laden. Therefore, Balakot is a part of the central Pakistani terror establishment. This manufacturing zone produces terrorists who are then sent for cross-border terror attacks.

In fact, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), the terror outfit that had carried out a dastardly terror attack on the CRPF convoy in Pulwama, had set up its first training centre in Balakot itself. The training centre of JeM had been set up by Maulana Masood Azhar, JeM chief after he was released during the IC-814 hijacking episode.

A number of terror strikes were planned by the JeM for which Jihadi terrorists had been trained at Balakot. Major attacks by Pakistani terrorists such as the 2001 terror attack at the Jammu & Kashmir state legislative assembly. During the NIA investigations into the Pathankot terror attack, Mogul and Maulviya had helped the investigative agency in identifying the voices of Azhar and Rauf Asghar, second-in command of Jaish e Mohammed. Moreover, a Pakistani terrorist arrested in North Kashmir in 2016 had also been trained there. Therefore, it is amply clear that Balakot is the breeding ground of Jihadi terrorism. The training centre had been actively used for carrying out cross border terror attacks in India.

It had been reported after the Pulwama terror attack that Pakistan had shifted its terror launchpads located near the LoC to or near Balakot. Pakistan feared a fierce Indian response which could have absolutely destroyed the Pakistani terror launchpads. However, this turned out to be a blunder on the part of Pakistan. By bringing the targets near Balakot, Pakistan made this target that much more lucrative.

India had already made up its mind to avenge the Pulwama terror attack and attack the Pakistani terror outfits in an unprecedented manner. There could not have been a better place than Balakot to crush Pakistani terrorism. India has dealt a decisive blow and attacking the terror camp located in Balakot might just be the turning point in India’s fight against terrorism.
