Yesterday, All India Congress Committee (AICC) extended an invitation to the ‘tukde tukde’ gang member, Kanhaiya Kumar, who is recently charge-sheeted in the JNU sedition case. The former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president was invited to an event remembering Mahatma Gandhi on his 72nd martyrdom. However, after a backlash on social media, the Congress party rescinded the invitation.

In the latest list of the invitees, the former JNUSU president’s name has been omitted. Earlier, a bunch of left-leaning leaders and activists including Priyanka Chaturvedi, Manish Tewari, RJD leader Manoj Jha and professor Apoorvanand along with Kanhaiya Kumar and Shehla Rashid were invited as the ‘eminent’ speakers. The seminar was scheduled to take earlier today in the national capital.
While taking a jibe at the Congress party’s move, BJP president Amit Shah threatened that Congress president may abuse the BJP and its leaders if he wanted to do so, but siding with an anti-national element will not be tolerated by the government. The BJP government will take a firm step against anyone appeasing this ‘tukde tukde’ gang, he added.

Earlier, on January 14, Delhi Police filed a 1200-page charge sheet in the ‘2016 JNU Sedition case’. Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were named as main-accused in the case. The police included seven other Kashmiri residents from JNU, Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia in the draft chargesheet. It has been sent to the public prosecutor for vetting and is expected to be filed in the Patiala House Court soon.
According to police sources, the draft chargesheet also mentions the name of 32 others, including the former JNU Students’ Union vice-president, Shehla Rashid (she was also invited to the event initially). But the sources also added that “sufficient evidence has not been found” against them.
The JNU sedition case had rocked the nation when on February 9, 2016, when an event was held in the JNU campus to protest the hanging of terrorist Afzal Guru. Thereafter, anti-national slogans were raised at the event. However, the liberal brigade and the ‘tukde tukde’ gang at that time asserted that shouting anti-national slogans is part of the freedom of speech guaranteed under the Constitution of India. Radical leftist elements made all attempts to trivialize this seditious act. Now, it seems that finally, this case is going to move ahead towards a reasonable conclusion.
Earlier, it was reported that Kanhaiya Kumar may contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Begusarai seat on RJD’s ticket. But since he has been chargesheeted in JNU sedition case, his chance of contesting the election is very low.

However, the ball is in the court of the Congress party. The ‘Grand Old Party’, time and again has taken sides with such anti-national elements. Earlier, Sagheer Saeed Khan, a Congress leader had sympathized with the terrorists and announced a cash reward for terrorists in case his party comes to power in the state. Going one step further, prominent INC leaders including Mani Shankar Aiyar and Salman Khurshid can be seen praising Pakistan, time and again. Whether it is the case of Ishrat Jahan, Batla House encounter, Yakub Memon or Ajmal Kasab; Congress’ leaders have come out and supported them openly.
