Moments after the Lower House of the Parliament had cleared the Triple Talaq Bill, making the practice of instant divorce a punishable offense, senior and controversial Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan chose to respond only to offer insensitive remarks as usual.

Talking to reporters, about the Triple Talaq Bill, Azam Khan said, “No matter how many laws they (BJP MPs) make to change the divorce law in Lok Sabha, we will only follow Quran and Hadith. The entire divorce procedure has been mentioned in these two holy books, followed by the entire Muslim world.” He further added, “The entire procedure of divorce is given in detail in the Quran. No one can disobey it. Divorce that takes place following the Quran’s procedure is divorce, but the one that does not follow this procedure is a sin.”

Azam Khan further targeted RSS workers as well. He said, “Why are they not sympathizing with other women? Why they sympathizing with the ones behind the masks (Burqa) where only their eyes are visible. And then sometimes RSS workers are found behind the Burqa, whenever it is taken off.”

He has not even spared the Indian Army and made derogatory remarks about the same. On June 27th, 2017, Azam Khan had appeared in a video giving a statement against the Indian Army where he had wrongly blamed the Indian Army soldiers of committing rape. He was caught on video saying, “Generally heads or hands are cut off. But on this occasion, the female terrorists cut off the private parts of the men. They didn’t have complaints against the hands, heads or feet. They had complaints specifically against the private parts so they cut and took them off. It is a huge message for which the entire country should be ashamed and think how we’ll face the world.”  His statements had caused an uproar in the country and the leader was slammed for his anti-Army remarks.

Earlier, also during 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he had made divisive remarks about the soldiers of Indian army who sacrificed their lives in the Kargil battle. He had said, “The peaks of Kargil was not occupied by any Hindu soldier, but it was the Muslim soldiers who did the job.” His controversial statement sparked an immediate protest from the BJP on creating a division in the army on the basis of religion.

He even justified the Paris attacks on November 2015 where 129 people were killed. He invited criticism by referring the attack as retaliation by oil-producing Arab countries on the western countries. When the world was mourning the innocent lives lost, he was busy sympathizing with the terrorists.

In 2010, Azam Khan had questioned whether Kashmir is part of India or not. He had said, “Only one Muslim minister (Gulam Nabi Azad) is there in the (Union) Cabinet and that too not of India, but from Kashmir. That Kashmir, which is still controversial and we don’t know whether that is part of India or not…”

His current remarks on Triple Talaq Bill are nothing but ridiculous and nonsense. The constitution, judiciary, and parliament appear to be of no relevance for him. Azam Khan and controversies are common phenomena in India. The SP leader who had sent top UP cops on the lookout for weeks to bring back his seven stolen buffaloes has always put his party in trouble by his illogical remarks.
