The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), for a long time, has come up with lucrative offers and changes. In 2006, the Indian Railways launched a win-win system in which passengers can check/mark the option to automatically upgrade their journey class while booking their tickets. The passengers are chosen at random and mechanically throughout the chart development process. Passengers can book the service online or offline at ticket counters at stations or through the option of auto upgradation in IRCTC online portal.

As the passenger’s information is entered into the ticketing software with the option to upgrade the class, the reservation system will take this into account and make the traveller eligible for an upgrade. The passengers are chosen at random and mechanically throughout the chart development process.

This promotion is only available to travellers who have purchased full-price tickets. According to the IRCTC, concession ticket/free pass holders, especially senior persons flying on concession, are not upgraded.

Some important and notable facts about the auto up-gradation system in IRCTC are, let’s say, at the time of charting, the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) does an automatic upgrade. According to the IRCTC, train conductors/ticket examiners have no jurisdiction to upgrade any passenger aboard the train under this scheme. Or the fact that if a customer who has been upgraded cancels his ticket, only the original class cancellation charges are due.

Everyone should also be aware of the prioritisation when it comes to the allotment of birth in a higher class. Confirmed travellers who have been promoted to a higher class will have their berths assigned to RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation)/WL (Waitlisted) passengers in that class. The unoccupied berths are given to confirmed passengers of the next lower class if there are still some berths available, according to IRCTC.

IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) provides auto ‘class upgradation’ option in online tickets. According to IRCTC’s official website irctc.co.in, under this offer, Indian Railways allows waitlisted railway passengers who have paid the full fare for the ticket, to upgrade their ticket to the highest class.

However, the benefit of this facility is not only available to the waiting list passengers, but it also benefits the Railways as it also fills their vacant seats in the highest class of all alternate trains. At the same time, the benefit of this facility is available only to those who have paid the full fare of the ticket. According to IRCTC, concession ticket/free pass holders including senior citizens traveling on concession are not entitled to upgrade their tickets.

7 key points related to auto upgradation scheme of IRCTC:

The auto upgradation in IRCTC is done automatically by PRS (Passenger Reservation System) during chart preparation. The Train Conductor and Ticket Examiner have no right to upgrade the ticket of any passenger in any train.

If a passenger whose ticket has been upgraded and has canceled his/her ticket, he/she has to pay only the cancellation charge for the original class.

According to IRCTC, auto upgradation of tickets is done in one class above class only. For example sleeper to third ac, third ac to second ac and second ac to first ac.

Under this scheme, the facility of confirmed seat is given only to the waitlisted passengers. The remaining seats of the train are shifted to the current counter for booking. In such a situation, if there is no waiting list in the train, then auto upgradation in IRCTC is not done.

The berth of a confirmed passenger who has been upgraded to a higher class is allotted to RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation/Waiting List) passengers of that class. Even after this, if some seats remain vacant, then allotment is made to the confirmed passengers of the lower class.

All passengers (maximum 6) can be upgraded simultaneously from one PNR.

Passengers get their tickets upgraded without asking them. Sleeper in AC coach, Cabin berth in side berth, Lower berth in upper berth, Cabin level accommodation to coach level compact accommodation. However, if the passenger selects ‘No’ in the option for auto upgradation in IRCTC while filling the form, then.
