The ‘Yogi factor’ in Chhattisgarh assembly elections

Cm Yogi, Chhattisgarh

PC: Business Standard

CM Yogi continues to be a popular campaigner for BJP in the various state assembly elections. After successful stint in UP, he was in demand in many assembly elections like in Gujarat, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Tripura as well.
Nobody would’ve imagined that a 5’4 inch politician from North India would make a powerful impact in the South or North-East states, but ‘impossible is nothing when you’ve Yogi campaigning for you’.
In Karnataka, while PM Modi’s pan-India acceptance is no secret, the Modi magic yet again helped BJP in performing well in the election. But one cannot overlook CM Yogi Aditayanath’s effort as it played big role in ensuring good performance for the BJP in Karnataka. His rallies in Karnataka helped in forming a strong bond with the Kannadiga population. CM Yogi’s heartwarming approach to the massive crowds at his rallies left an impact which can be seen in the number of seats won by BJP. He addressed around 24 rallies during the election campaign.
When results in Tripura were declared, leading national English daily declared, “BJP bagged 17 out of 20 seats CM Yogi campaigned.”
The Nath community in Tripura provided that essential push or a decisive jump in BJP’s fortunes as it propelled towards a comfortable majority. In Tripura, a considerable population of Hindu Bengalis belonged to the Nath community and they followed Shaivism. Naths are classified as an OBC group in the Centre’s list, and they are quite an influential community in Tripura and very well stood upto it.
Following the footsteps of Gujarat and Karnataka, BJP fielded CM Yogi for campaigning in the Tripura assembly elections too. CM Yogi addressed a number of rallies in the state and had public meetings at Kamalpur, Kanchanpur and Jubrajnagar. The party also requested him to extend his previously planned visit of one day and his campaign schedule was packed with rallies, road shows and temple visits.
Going on the same lines, in Chhattisgarh too CM Yogi is in demand. The increasing demand for CM Yogi in Chhattisgarh is also due to him being chief of the Nath Panth which is very prevalent and popular in the tribal areas of the state.
The UP CM will address rallies in Chhattisgarh on November 10 and November 11 then he would come back to Varanasi where Prime Minister Narendra Modi would receive the first consignment of containers moving on the Ganga from Kolkata to Varanasi on November 12 as India revives its inland waterways for freight movement. After PM’s programme, he will once again go to Chhattisgarh and address rallies on November 14, 15 and 18.

Moreover, followers of the Nath Panth in the tribal area are in large counts and CM Yogi is the head of the Gorakhnath Math which happens to the fountain head of the Nath sect. The religious head of the community campaigning in the state would be just the right push for the community to go out and vote for BJP.
Even Dr. Raman Singh, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh gives him respect as the chief priest of the Peeth. This is also to be recalled that CM Yogi also came to Chhattisgarh for nomination of state’s CM Raman Singh and the Chhattisgarh chief minister sought blessings of CM Yogi by touching his feet. His saffron clothes, clear conviction on Hindutva and making that in public without an iota of hesitation have been drawing huge crowd.
His conviction while addressing any rally is something that not only attracts eye-balls but compels people to stand still and listen to his every word.
Let’s hope that like the positive results in Karnataka and Tripura, Dr. Raman Singh in Chhattisgarh gets the benefit of the ‘Yogi factor.’
