When the entire Left Ecosystem flocked together to troll the dissenters

Tum karo toh Freedom of Expression, hum karein toh trolling has become a familiar adage in India’s current political discourse. In fact, troll has become a standard term used to denigrate, humiliate and shame all those who espouse causes that do not match the Leftist worldview. This is not the first time that Leftists have resorted to ‘label-mongering’ to silence their critics. Words such as ‘Fascist’, ‘Reactionary’, ‘Ultra-nationalist’ and ‘Nazi’ have been liberally used by Leftists in the past to name and shame their opponents. To be honest, their strategy has worked well for decades.

Indira Gandhi got rid of Subramaniam Swamy by labelling him as ‘Santa Claus with unrealistic ideas’. Dr. Bibek Debroy has, on multiple occasions recounted how eminent economists Dr. Shenoy and Jagdish Bhagwati were forced to flee India because their outlooks did not endear them to the left-wing intelligensia. It is not just that Left silences its critics by using speech as a weapon. On multiple occasions, Leftwingers are known to have physically attacked their opponents to deter them from speaking their minds. One need not refer to the Leftist violence in Kerala and West Bengal to drive home this point.

Not so long ago, Leftist students attempted to physically prevent Makarand Paranjape, one of the rare JNU professors who disagrees with the Left, from entering his office on JNU campus, ostensibly under the aegis of ‘Social Justice Philosophy’, whatever that collection of disparate words means!

This system has worked well for so long that most Indians, while speaking their minds out in private would strive to appear politically correct in the outside world. This enabled the NDTVs, the Arundhati Roys, the Sitaram Yechurys of the world to establish themselves as the voice and conscience of India. These ‘conscience keepers’ of the nation ensured that while Gujarat riots dominated the national discourse for years, Godhra train burning that preceded them was given a quiet burial. With the advent of Social Media, millions of Indians have broken free from the shackles placed on them by the Left and Left-sponsored Media. In fact, the emergence of Social Media has resulted in Mainstream Media becoming completely discredited, hence the term Presstitute.

Presstitution was once again on display during the recent ABVP-Left wing Unions face off in Delhi. Gurmehar Kaur, whose idiotic musings, were shrilly defended as ‘Freedom of Expression’ dominated the national discourse. There were allegations of rape threats and violence, all of which were blamed on the ABVP, without any basis. Attempts by a section of the society to oppose Gurmehar’s views was systematically labelled as Trolling and these trolls were subjected to violent attacks on Social media.

Virender Sehwag, who for years has been an ‘Indian Hriday Samrat’, was subjected to abuses. Not only that, his wife was dragged into tweets and her modesty was outraged. Why, you ask? Because Sehwag chose to differ with the Leftist discourse and that is what Left, with all its talk about ‘Freedom of Expression’ does when confronted with dissent. Similarly, Randeep Hooda was named and shamed and finally forced to withdraw from the debate with a facebook post.

But the biggest manifestation of Left’s and Left-supported Media’s intolerance came when they chose to turn their heads away when the Phogat sisters were attacked for their views.

Eminent ‘Liberal’, Javed Akhtar chose to label the Phogat sisters and Yogeshwar Dutt, another celebrated wrestler as ‘hardly literate’ and attacked them for their views against Gurmehar Kaur. The Leftist ecospace, which for so long had been shouting in support of Gurmehar’s Freedom of Expression, now supported men like Javed Akhtar who were silencing critics by labelling them as ‘hardly literate’. Instead of debating with the Phogat sisters or offering his points of view, Javed Akhtar dismissed Phogat sisters’ contrarian views as meaningless because they were ‘hardly literate’. While Javed Akhtar might be renowned for his knowledge of Urdu and penning gems of songs as ‘meri laundry ka ek bill ik aadhi padhi novel’, the Phogat sisters, brought up by their indefatigable father, Shri Mahavir Phogat, have enesured that India’s head is held high on the world stage. Phogat sisters represent the best in the country, as they made it to the top, fighting their way through innumerable challenges. Like Kanhaiyya Kumar, another adored leftist face, they too could have launched protests against the government and the society but they chose to fight their way to the top. As though it wasn’t enough for the Phogat sisters to be ‘trolled’, and ‘trolled’ is the right terminology to be used in this case, an unknown and unheard of individual by the name of Kamaal R Khan chose to refer to Babita Phogat, Virender Sehwag and Randeep Hooda as ‘Idiots’. Once again, no Leftist was in sight to stand up for the gross injustice being meted out to India’s most successful faces.

No Left wing sympathizer called for candle-light marches against the insult to Phogat sisters, or to Sehwag ‘s wife.

This is how the Leftist eco system operates. When they come under attack in the form of dissent, they let out their rabid dogs to assault their opponents. These assaults can be both personal and physical. One shouldn’t be surprised to see placard holding Leftists protesting outside Phogats’ home to terrorize them. Once the Left’s opponents have been scared and driven away, the Left resumes its monologue on Freedom of expression. Fortunately, for once the Left is being paid back in the same coin. For once, the Left is worried that it is losing the uninterrupted hegemony that it has enjoyed for years together. The likes of Phogat sisters, Virender Sehwag, Yogeshwar Dutt, Randeep Hooda and others symbolize the new India that is not afraid to speak its mind on the right cause!
