Did you hear Mariyappan’s story? What’s your new excuse now, Barkha?

Mariyappan Thangavelu

9th September 2016, Friday shall go down in the sporting history of INDIA as another historic day, when para high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu jumped high a staggering 1.89 m, only 7 centimeters short of the event, Men’s High Jump T 42’s world record of 1.96 m. If that is enough, repeating the historic feat of 1984, another INDIAN, Varun Singh Bhati won the bronze medal in the same event, recording a height of 1.86 m.

But that is not all. Mariyappan, with his gold medal, has debunked and completely destroyed the following theories, that any Left dominated pseudo liberal of the Indian origin will put forward when INDIA fails at the big stage, whether Olympics or cinema as the list goes on:-

  1. Lack of economic opportunities forced him…

The pet line of the intellectual terrorists in INDIA, ever since their poster boy, Burhan Wani was shot down (deservedly), this tends to imply that poverty forces someone to be only a criminal, nothing else. Initiated by intellectual terrorist (and covert traitor allegedly), NDTV editor head Barkha Dutt, this theory, had it been universally applicable, would have made half of the Indian contingent at the Olympics and almost the entire Paralympic contingent qualified terrorists. The gold medalist, Mariyappan Thangavelu’s condition was no better. His leg had been crushed 16 years ago by a mad running bus, his father had left the family to themselves more than a decade ago, and his mother used to sell vegetables and do part time labor for a living.

Yet, Mariyappan did not become a terrorist, and instead, made INDIA proud. What’s your new excuse now, Barkha?

  1. INDIANS are not that physically strong…

Another theory, that is continuously, but quietly destroyed by the para athletes. Mariyappan is no exception. He won a gold medal in the category, where an able bodied INDIAN is yet to win an Olympic medal. Ironic, isn’t it? Mariyappan has proved beyond doubt, that we INDIANS are as much empowered physically as any foreigner would, we only need the right attitude and the innate patriotism to achieve the ultimate glory. Mariyappan’s gold medal performance is also a tight slap to those able bodied Olympians, who performed below par at Rio 2016, and gave flimsy excuses to get away (gallant losers like Abhinav Bindra, Dipa Karmakar etc. being the sole exceptions apart from the medalists). If a person with a crushed right foot can do it, why can’t you? So stop cribbing, and start acting! Tokyo 2020 is not going anywhere.

  1. INDIA doesn’t have adequate facilities, LOG KYA KAHENGE…

If someone has destroyed this maxim to the shreds, it is Mariyappan and Varun. Technically, both belonged to the rather overlooked section of the Indian society, the specially abled. Besides, Mariyappan had such a dark past behind him; one would be seriously surprised as to how he managed to win a gold medal. His mother is fighting two lone battles: one against the loan sharks, in order to waive the loan of Rs. 3 lakhs taken for Mariyappan’s medical treatment, and the other against the Transport Department, for the accident that took away Mariyappan’s right foot. Despite being an educated BBA graduate, he was yet to find a job, his mother and her other children lived in a one roomed house, for which a rent had to be paid for Rs. 500 a month. Mariyappan’s coach for the event used to give him a stipend of Rs. 10000 a month to make his ends meet.

If that is enough, Mariyappan’s Rio dreams were threatened with the lack of funds. However, contrary to the expectations, it was the Sports Authority of INDIA, and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, which came to Mariyappan Thangavelu’s rescue.

Now, he is not only entitled to Rs. 75 lakhs by the Central government, he is also entitled to a cash prize of Rs. 2 crore by the Tamil Nadu government, the state where Mariyappan belongs to. With this, Mariyappan also destroyed the notion that one can’t succeed beyond the profession of medicine and engineering in INDIA. Now what?

We still have eight days left, the best are yet to come, and we already have two medals. Thank you Mariyappan, for proving everyone else wrong, and the INDIAN right. Thank you Mariyappan, you deserve the gold you won for INDIA!

On the other hand, Varun Singh Bhati, you equally deserve the accolades for giving INDIA another reason to smile with your bronze!

Vande Mataram!
