2012-13: The UPA II government, led by Dr. Manmohan Singh (and commanded by Sonia Gandhi, the unquestionable) was at the helm of the affairs in the Centre. An army operation in Jorhat, Asom, failed rather miserably. The then Chief of Army Staff, General Vijay Kumar Singh, from the Rajput Regiment, who was already at the loggerheads with the Central Government, slapped a Discipline and Vigilance Promotion Ban on the 3 Corps Commander of the unit involved in the botched operation. However, an appeal against the same was filed in the Court of The Armed Forces, and VK Singh’s successor, General Bikram Singh, had the ban nullified.
4 years later, the Commander of the botched operation, now the Chief of Army Staff, General Dalbir Singh Suhag, from the Gorkha Rifles, in a recent affidavit to the Supreme Court, has now claimed that VK Singh, now the Minister of External Affairs (State) and Minister of State for development of North East Region, has tried to victimize him with the ban, thus beating a dead horse once again.
Ever since the ban on General Dalbir Singh Suhag had been nullified in early 2014, under the instructions of the receding UPA II government and outgoing General Bikram Singh, General VK Singh has been accused of mudslinging and misuse of power, which was incentivized after the Modi Government, which had just been formed in 2014, allegedly informed the Supreme Court, that the grounds on which the ban on Suhag was imposed was ‘vague’, ‘premeditated’ and ‘illegal’. Now backed allegedly by the Congress party, General Suhag has asserted that VK Singh had imposed the ban with a ‘malafide’ intention.
Outwardly, it would have looked like General VK Singh is in for some real trouble now. But if we scratch the mud off the books of history, we would have a different picture altogether. Most of you might remember, if not forgotten, about the date of birth controversy, which had brought the warring instincts of the ex-General for the first time to the forefront.
In 2010, General VK Singh had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court to correct his date of birth. However, what was a simple issue of correction was taken up by the Congress government, under the imperial control of Sonia Gandhi, as an apparent challenge to their authority, and they campaigned against the same. Surprisingly, to the legal fraternity’s own shock, the Supreme Court refused to allow the corrections, ruling in favor of the government.
If this was enough, one of the grounds for nullifying the ban on General Suhag, under General Bikram Singh, was that General VK Singh allegedly wished to impose nepotism in the echelons of the Army circle, by banning General Suhag, so that the road of Lt. General Ashok Singh, coincidentally his son in law would be more clear. Although none of this has been proved beyond doubt, yet one can feel the force of the politics playing a dirty game with the straightforward General (which is obviously VK Singh, not Suhag).
In the words of a retired Lieutenant General, who told The Economic Times on the condition of the anonymity, “Unfortunately, the armed forces are becoming increasingly politicized, with declining standards of leadership. Politicians and bureaucrats have actively worked to interfere in the internal working of the forces, while systematically downgrading their status and standing.”
This is not the first time such an incident has happened. In 1983, Indira Gandhi had actively involved herself in promoting decorated officer, double Maha Vir Chakra winner Lt. General Arun Sridhar Vaidya as the Army Chief, over the Lt. General SK Sinha, who was waiting to be promoted, as per the books. Arun Vaidya was the chief force behind the much touted ‘Operation Bluestar’, and was assassinated for the same later on 10th August 1986 by members of the terrorist group, Khalistan Commando Force.
Even though he had resigned, VK Singh, the true Army man, refused to be cowed down.
After the block of Lutyens’ journalists (in reality the Indian intellectual terrorists sponsored by the pseudo secular cordon of politicians) criticized him for his proactive attitude in the rescue operation in Yemen, VK Singh had termed them ‘Presstitutes’. He even criticized the Goebbels propaganda of ‘INTOLERANCE’, sponsored ahead of Bihar elections 2015, counter questioning if even the incident of hitting a stray dog with a stone would be blown out of proportions like the lynching in Bisahda, Dadri, although his statement was later blown out of proportions, in a sinister fashion, to sponsor Lalu backed ‘Mahagathbandhan’.
While the Defence Ministry has sought inquiry into the affidavit as of now, the real issue is something else. Is General Dalbir Singh Suhag trying to rake up the dead bones, for someone else’s political advantage?
If yes, then this might spell trouble for both the ethos of the army and the Central government as well, already under threat from the pseudo secular forces.
