The Government of Uttar Pradesh launched the Yamuna Expressway Project to shorten travel time between New Delhi and Agra. The primary goal of this project is to link the National Capital Region with the Taj Mahal. Greater Noida. Traveling on the Yamuna Expressway can be expensive. Rs 294 crore is to be spent to implement the security audit report of IIT. To meet this amount, preparations are being made to increase the Yamuna Expressway toll Rates by 10 to 20 paise per kilometer per vehicle. A decision on this can be taken in the proposed board meeting of Yamuna Authority in the third week of December.

In order to prevent the frequent accidents on Yamuna Expressway, the Uttar Pradesh government had ordered a safety audit on the directions of the Supreme Court, after which IIT Delhi surveyed the Yamuna Expressway and gave some suggestions to increase the safety measures. About Rs 294 crore will be spent to work on these suggestions. Action is going on against Jaypee Infratech, which operates Yamuna Expressway, under the bank insolvency process. Hence, Jaypee Infratech cannot spend this money to implement these safeguards. In such a situation, Yamuna Authority (YIDA) has decided to take this safety measure at its level. This amount will be recovered from the passengers only.

For this, a proposal to increase the Yamuna Expressway toll rates will be proposed in the upcoming board meeting. The CEO of YIDA, Dr. Arunveer Singh told that if the board meeting is held this month, then the increased toll rates can be implemented from January 1. These toll rates will not be permanent. These toll rates will be withdrawn after recovering Rs 294 crore. For this an escrow account will be opened and the money of the increased toll rates will be deposited in this bank account itself. At present, the bank insolvency process against Jaypee Infratech is pending in NCLT, due to which the company cannot spend the money. The Yamuna Authority is contemplating to agree to increase the rates to implement the safety standards on the highway.

By car, Agra is roughly 210 kilometres from Delhi and takes about 3-4 hours (depends upon traffic and other conditions). The trip between Greater Noida and Agra is decreased to 165 km via the Yamuna Expressway, which takes almost 100 minutes (two-and-a-half hours). Yamuna Expressway is a 6-lane (extendable to 8 alleys) with a total plan cost was Rs. 128.39 billion (US$1.8 billion).
