Jasleen Kaur – We do not want a fake hero this time, this better be real

In a nation where crime against women is not a rare phenomenon, when we see a lady standing for herself what is our first natural reaction?

Good job lady.

You made us proud.

You are so brave.

You inspire us!

When the Rohtak sisters sprang onto the eve teasers in a public bus with belts and slippers. What did we do? We stood up and clapped. We are a nation starved of heroes. And when we find an unlikely hero in a lady, our chests swell with pride. For us Maa Durga renounces her idol form and comes out to protect the dignity of the womankind. The Rohtak Sisters were heroes for us.

When a lady confronted a traffic cop in the national capital, we clapped again. Not many can stare the Vardiwallahs right in their eyes. She was a hero for us again. Arvind Kejriwal, the epitome of honesty called her for a “Chai pe Charcha” and awarded her with a cash prize.

Another lady, a Muslim Lady refused to bow down to bigoted property dealers of Mumbai. They denied her a flat in a Hindu society, she showed them the true power of woman and also their place.

And now we have yet another hero in Jasleen Kaur. She showed an eve teaser that Girls are no weaklings and no one can intimidate them just like that. The girl utilized the power of Internet to pin the culprit. The culprit is nabbed and the internet is abuzz with the latest superhero of the nation. Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s part time CM and fulltime superhero is praising the latest hero on the block again. And this time he has found an unlikely ally in Delhi Police. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar said that Jasleen Kaur will be awarded Rs 5,000 for her bravery of being able to talk about the incident openly.

The sad part is that Rohtak Sisters were liars and bullies. The lady who confronted the traffic cop violated traffic rules and then tried to slip away without furnishing a fine. The Muslim lady’s version of story was ripped apart by the probing authorities but Jasleen Kaur is still a hero ‘probably’ because the case has just come to light. As a fan of the power of Internet, I sincerely hope Jasleen Kaur stays a hero and doesn’t turn into another Rohtak Sister, or the lady who bullied a cop or the one who created a scene about nothing.

But this trend is alarming. ALARMING. This Car and Bicycle mentality is disconcerting. DISCONCERTING. We decide the victim and the perpetrator just like that. Oh a Car knocked a cycle down, set the goddamn car ablaze, the Car driver is a culprit for sure. Oh a nice lady slapped a man in open daylight, the man must be a lecher. The bastard got what he deserved. What is the point of probe agencies, police, judges and courts then when cases can be solved on Facebook and Twitter with the help of a simple photograph? Without the testimonials of witnesses, without an audio or video proof? I am not trying to take the alleged eve teaser’s side but what if he is innocent? His life is screwed for sure. And the rumor mill is already abuzz with a different version of the story. A snapshot is already doing rounds of the internet where Jasleen Kaur is being projected as an Aam Aadmi Party insider who is slated to play a big role in Delhi University’s elections. I could have added the snapshot in this article, but hey! I trust the system and do not accuse before the truth is out. I am sure the truth will soon be out in the open. If it turns out to be a hoax again, I’ll be ashamed as a citizen of this country!
