Mohammad Shams Deported from Japan After Molestation Allegations

Indian para swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh has been sent back to India from Japan following allegations of sexual harassment and molestation involving a female hotel employee during the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya. Japanese police reportedly detained the 40-year-old athlete after the complaint, while the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) is considering stringent disciplinary action, including a possible lifetime ban. The incident has raised serious questions about athlete conduct, accountability and the responsibility that comes with representing India at an international sporting event.

According to reports published on October 22, the alleged incident occurred on Monday at the hotel where the Indian para-swimming contingent was staying. A female housekeeping employee was reportedly carrying out her duties when the alleged misconduct took place. The complaint was subsequently brought to the attention of hotel management, the local organising committee and officials of the Indian delegation.

Japanese police intervened after receiving information about the complaint and detained the swimmer for questioning. Reports citing officials associated with the Indian contingent state that the allegations involved inappropriate touching and sexually suggestive behaviour. The circumstances surrounding the incident have prompted concern among sports administrators, particularly because the athlete was participating as a member of India’s official delegation. The allegations, however, must be distinguished from a final judicial finding of guilt.

The controversy reportedly escalated when the local organising committee and hotel authorities sought action from the Indian delegation. According to accounts attributed to delegation officials, the Indian side apologised to the hotel authorities and the affected employee, while arrangements were made for the swimmer to leave Japan. He reportedly stayed at another hotel before departing for India on Tuesday, a day after the alleged incident.

Mohammad Shams was expected to compete in his scheduled events at the Asian Para Games but returned home without participating. His departure disrupted his campaign at a competition where Indian athletes were competing for medals across several disciplines. The incident also diverted the attention of delegation officials from the sporting programme, according to reports from the Games.

The Paralympic Committee of India is reportedly considering severe disciplinary measures. Officials have indicated that a lifetime ban is among the possible sanctions, although the formal decision and applicable disciplinary process remain important. According to India United Press, the PCI said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct and behaviour that violates the dignity, safety and rights of others. The committee also stated that further action would be taken by the competent authorities under the applicable rules after the Games conclude.

The episode has revived discussion about the standards expected of athletes representing the country abroad. International sporting delegations are not judged solely by their performances in competition; their members are also expected to observe the laws of the host country, respect the people they encounter and comply with the conduct requirements established by their sporting organisations. Allegations of misconduct can therefore have consequences extending beyond an individual athlete, affecting the reputation of the wider contingent.

Mohammad Shams is an experienced para swimmer from Bihar who has represented India at major international competitions. According to World Para Swimming records cited in media reports, he previously achieved a world No. 1 ranking in the men’s 100-metre butterfly S5 and 50-metre breaststroke SB4 categories. His career includes notable performances at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, where he won gold medals in the 200-metre and 50-metre breaststroke events.

He also recorded significant success at the Reykjavik International Games in Iceland, winning gold in the 200-metre breaststroke in 2025 and setting Indian and Asian records, according to published accounts. The 2026 Asian Para Games were expected to mark his third consecutive appearance at the competition. His sporting achievements, however, do not exempt him from scrutiny over allegations of misconduct.

The case involving Mohammad Shams underscores the importance of transparent investigations and fair disciplinary procedures. The complaint must be taken seriously, and the rights and dignity of the woman involved must remain central to the process. At the same time, any final conclusions about the athlete’s conduct should be grounded in established evidence and the findings of the relevant authorities.

As the PCI reviews the matter, attention will focus on whether a lifetime ban or another disciplinary penalty is formally imposed. The outcome will also serve as a reminder that representing India on the international stage carries obligations beyond athletic performance, including respect for the law, professional discipline and responsible conduct.
