Indian Navy Evacuates Injured Vietnamese Sailor from Merchant Vessel Off Great Nicobar

Andaman and Nicobar Command coordinates early-morning medical evacuation near Indira Point

The Indian Navy’s Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) carried out a medical evacuation at sea on October 4, rescuing an injured Vietnamese national from a merchant vessel off the southern tip of the Nicobar Islands.

The casualty was a crew member aboard the merchant tanker MT Sun 09. ANC coordinated the early-morning operation after receiving word of the medical emergency on board.

A ship from the command’s Naval Component proceeded to the vicinity of Indira Point, India’s southernmost point on Great Nicobar Island. The casualty was brought off the merchant vessel through boat operations and given immediate first aid on board the naval ship. His vital parameters were stabilised before he was transferred to Campbell Bay for further medical treatment.

The Navy said the swift and coordinated response reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maritime safety and saving lives at sea. The Andaman and Nicobar Command is India’s only tri-service theatre command, and it is responsible for the strategically important waters at the western entrance to the Strait of Malacca.
