India successfully test-fired the Medium Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-4’ from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The launch validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile, according to official sources. The test was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).
The trial came days after India had issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) covering a 2,530-kilometre corridor over the Bay of Bengal for August 6-7, indicating preparations for a likely long-range missile test. The advisory, applicable from sea level to unlimited altitude, had restricted civilian aviation and maritime activity across the notified zone as a standard safety measure ahead of the strategic weapons trial.
The NOTAM range was subsequently extended to approximately 3,760 kilometres ahead of the trials, further fuelling speculation among defence observers, several of whom speculated the test could involve a more advanced Agni variant given the scale of the exclusion zone. The launch was expected to originate from facilities operated by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Strategic Forces Command, off the Odisha coast.
The successful test-firing of the Agni-4 has now put that speculation to rest, confirming the missile involved in the trial that the extended NOTAM had preceded.
Agni-4 is part of India’s Agni series of missiles, a key component of the country’s strategic deterrence capability. The successful trial reaffirms the reliability and precision of the indigenously developed missile system.
