Former Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, is set to take his oath as a Rajya Sabha member on April 10, marking the first step toward the formation of the state’s new government.
According to media reports, Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary confirmed the schedule and said, “This is an important first step before the induction of the new government. Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha oath will take place on April 10.”
Kumar’s swearing-in will precede that of other newly elected MPs from Bihar, highlighting the strategic significance of his entry into the Upper House of Parliament.
Newly Elected Bihar MPs to Be Sworn in on April 16
Bihar’s newly elected Rajya Sabha members, including BJP national president Nitin Naveen and Sivesh Kumar, will take their oaths on April 16 during a special session of Parliament.
Alongside BJP leaders, Upendra Kushwaha, head of the RLM, will also be sworn in on the same day and all ceremonies will be held in the Rajya Sabha chamber.
BJP Holds Key Delhi Meeting Ahead of Govt Formation
As per reports, sources in the BJP indicated that a crucial meeting of Bihar BJP leaders will take place in Delhi on April 10, led by Nitin Naveen. Senior central and state BJP leaders are expected to attend, including Bihar BJP president Sanjay Sarawagi, deputy leader Samrat Chaudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Nityanand Rai, Sanjay Jaiswal, regional organisation secretary Nagendra Ji, state organisation secretary Bhiku Bhai Dalsania, and ministers Dilip Jaiswal and Mangal Pandey.
The agenda of the meeting includes finalising the name of the new Chief Minister through the state core committee, attempting to build consensus, and planning the next steps following Nitish Kumar’s resignation as Chief Minister.
Nitish Kumar’s Political Repositioning
Nitish Kumar’s shift to the Rajya Sabha comes after a series of political developments in Bihar. Recently, he resigned as Chief Minister, ending his alliance with the BJP-led government in the state.
This move has positioned him to play a significant role in shaping the new government, while maintaining his influence in Bihar politics. Analysts note that his Rajya Sabha membership will allow him to coordinate more closely with central leadership and remain a key player in the state’s political landscape.
Likely Contenders for Bihar’s Next CM Face
With Nitish Kumar expected to resign as Bihar Chief Minister shortly after taking his Rajya Sabha oath, speculation is intensifying over who will succeed him. Political developments and discussions within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) suggest that the next Chief Minister is likely to come from the BJP, marking a possible shift in leadership for the state.
Among BJP leaders, Samrat Chaudhary, who currently serves as Deputy Chief Minister, is widely considered a frontrunner for the top post, with several reports naming him as a leading contender.
Other names, including BJP colleagues like Nityanand Ra and Vijay Kumar Sinha are also being discussed within political circles, but no official decision has yet been announced.
Additionally, there are murmurs about Nishant Kumar, Nitish’s son who recently entered politics, being positioned for a significant role in the new government, though his prospects as CM are seen as less likely due to limited experience.
Final consensus on the chief ministerial candidate will depend on internal NDA deliberations and caste–region political calculations ahead of the government’s formation.
