Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh asserted that the state remains on a tight leash despite ongoing unrest, stating that the law and order situation is “sensitive but under control” in the wake of protests and clashes across the Imphal valley.
The assessment came after a high-level meeting at the state secretariat in Imphal with the Inspector General Assam Rifles (South). In a statement shared on Facebook, Singh said a detailed briefing by IGAR (South) Major General Gaurav Sharma “reaffirmed” that the situation, while delicate, is being managed effectively, with security forces responding to disturbances with “utmost care and restraint” while maintaining stability.
The Chief Minister’s remarks carry significance as tensions continue to simmer across five districts in the Imphal valley, where protests and confrontations with security forces have become frequent in recent days. Despite the volatility, the state leadership has projected confidence that the situation has not slipped beyond control.
Security Forces Adopt Calibrated Approach Amid Unrest
According to Singh, the security establishment is pursuing a measured strategy aimed at preventing escalation without compromising enforcement. The briefing underscored that forces on the ground are acting with restraint even as they remain fully equipped to respond to any disturbance.
This calibrated approach reflects the administration’s attempt to strike a balance between control and caution in a region where tensions remain highly sensitive. Singh emphasised that coordination between the government and security agencies is continuous, ensuring that responses remain swift, proportionate, and effective.
At the same time, the Chief Minister issued a pointed appeal to the public, urging citizens to remain vigilant against rumours and misinformation. He cautioned that the spread of unverified claims could inflame passions and further destabilise the fragile situation.
April 7 Attack at Tronglaobi Sparks Valley-Wide Protests
The current unrest traces back to the April 7 bomb attack at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district, a brutal incident that claimed the lives of two children and triggered widespread outrage. The attack has since become a spark leading to protests and clashes across multiple districts in the Imphal valley amongst tribes.
Acknowledging the gravity of the incident, Singh reiterated that the government is committed to ensuring justice. He assured that accountability will be established and that justice “will be delivered in due course”, even as the administration prioritises restoring peace and normalcy.
Government Seeks Public Cooperation to Prevent Escalation
With tensions still running high, the Chief Minister stressed the need for collective responsibility. He called on citizens to cooperate with authorities and avoid actions that could aggravate the situation.
The government’s position is clear and deliberate. While Manipur remains tense after a tragedy that has shaken public sentiment, the administration maintains that it is firmly in control, relying on disciplined security response, public cooperation, and a commitment to justice to steer the state back towards stability.
