The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has apprehended a Maulana in connection with an alleged inflammatory speech delivered during an Eid gathering in Saharanpur.
According to media reports, the cleric was taken into custody while he was returning to Deoband from Meerut and is alleged to have made statements in support of a banned terrorist organization and attempted to incite youth while disturbing public order.
The investigation was initiated after concerns were raised over his remarks during a religious gathering in Thitki village, Deoband, on the occasion of Eid.
As per the complaint, the Maulana openly expressed support for Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based organization, which is designated as a terrorist group by several countries. He is also alleged to have challenged the authority of the police and administrative machinery.
The situation reportedly escalated when some attendees raised slogans against the United States and Israel, creating tension in the area. Minor scuffles between police personnel and local attendees were also reported.
Allegations of Youth Radicalization
Following the incident, local police and intelligence agencies intensified their surveillance. Preliminary investigations suggest that the Maulana was also using social media platforms to influence young individuals. He is accused of circulating provocative videos and messages aimed at fostering unrest and encouraging protest activities.
Acting on these inputs, the ATS began monitoring his movements and communication channels before detaining him for questioning.
Foreign Travel Under Scrutiny
Investigators have also revealed that the cleric has undertaken multiple foreign trips in recent years. He is said to have spent a significant period in Iran, where he pursued religious education for nearly seven years at a reputed institution. In addition, he has reportedly traveled to countries including Iraq, Qatar, Oman, and Dubai.
Authorities are now probing his contacts and associations during these visits to determine whether any suspicious links exist or whether these travels were connected to his alleged activities.
This is not the first time the Maulana has come under the scanner of investigative agencies. Earlier, he had sought permission to organize a candle march in Deoband to commemorate victims of a blast at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan. However, the request was denied by the administration. Since then, his activities have reportedly been under continuous surveillance.
Probe Into Possible Network Links
The ATS has conducted a detailed examination of the Maulana’s mobile phone, social media accounts, and network of contacts. Officials suspect that the case may be part of a broader network, prompting a comprehensive investigation into all possible angles.
While there are reports suggesting that he was released after questioning, there has been no official confirmation from authorities regarding his release.
