Sayali Surve, the winner of the Miss India Earth 2019 title, has reconverted to Hinduism after alleging harassment during her marriage to a Muslim businessman.
The incident, which took place in Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune, has triggered widespread discussion on social media and in political circles across Maharashtra.
According to media reports, Surve married businessman Aatif Tase from Mira-Bhayandar in 2019 despite opposition from her family. Following the interfaith marriage, she converted to Islam and reportedly adopted the name Ateja (or Ateza) Tase. However, the marriage later turned troubled.
As per reports, while speaking to the media, Surve alleged that she faced both mental and physical harassment after the wedding. She also claimed that she was pressured to change her religion following the marriage.
“Marrying Aatif Tase was the biggest mistake of my life,” Surve said while addressing media reportedly. She added that she endured the situation for several years mainly for the sake of her children.
Surve further stated that she had approached the police multiple times with complaints about the alleged harassment, but claimed she did not receive the help she had expected. Eventually, she decided to leave the relationship and return to her original faith.
With the support of several Hindu organisations, a purification ritual was conducted in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The ceremony included traditional Vedic practices such as a havan and the chanting of mantras. Following the ritual, Surve reportedly adopted a new name, Aadya Surve.
Surve said she stayed in the marriage for a long time, hoping things would change. She also thought about her children and did not want to break the family. But as they grew older, she said she became worried about the environment they were growing up in. That concern eventually pushed her to walk away.

According to News 18, calling the situation a case of “love jihad,” Surve said, “Definitely love jihad ka mamla hai. Kai log mana karte hain aur bolte hain ki jab maine khud yeh kiya tha, toh aaj kya bolna. Jab maine yeh decision liya tha, tab itni samajh nahi thi. Main bharose mein, unhe ek achha insaan samajh kar gayi thi. Yeh saari cheezein iss dharm mein zaroor hoti hain.”
Originally from Mumbai and raised in Pune, Surve built her early career in modelling and beauty pageants. She gained national attention after winning the Miss India Earth title in 2019 and later pursued higher education in aviation studies.
Authorities have not yet released detailed statements regarding the allegations, and the matter continues to draw attention across Maharashtra.
