In a shocking and senseless act of violence, a 55-year-old Indian-origin businessman was fatally attacked after he confronted a man who was urinating on his car in central Edmonton, Canada.
The victim, identified as Arvi Singh Sagoo, succumbed to his injuries five days later, said the Edmonton Police Service in a statement.
The incident occurred in the early hours of October 19, when Sagoo and his girlfriend were returning to their vehicle after dinner. As they approached, they discovered a man relieving himself on the car.
Sagoo confronted him and asked, “Hey, what are you doing?” To this, the stranger allegedly replied, “Whatever I want,” and punched Sagoo in the head, according to a statement from his brother to Global News.
Following this, Sagoo collapsed instantly, and his girlfriend immediately called emergency services.
Responding officers from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) found him unresponsive near 109 Street and 100 Avenue.
He was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support but succumbed to his injuries on October 24, five days after the attack.
The accused, identified as 40-year-old Kyle Papin, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
Police described the assault as “completely unprovoked,” confirming there was no prior connection between the suspect and the victim.
The brutal attack has sparked anger and fear among members of the Indian community in Canada, amid growing concerns over racially motivated violence.
Family and friends remembered Sagoo as a warm-hearted and devoted father of two. His close friend, Vincent Ram, has launched an online fundraiser to support Sagoo’s children, cover funeral expenses, and secure their education.
“This fundraiser aims to honour a kind and loving father and ensure his children have the support they need during this devastating time,” the campaign message read.
“Arvi Sagoo’s family and friends are remembering him as a funny, outgoing man who loved his family. He leaves behind two teenage children. His brother said he did nothing to deserve this deadly assault,” journalist Sarah Ryan posted on social media.
The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Unit continues to investigate the case, with additional charges related to Sagoo’s death pending.
The accused is expected to appear in court on November 4.
