An incident of public molestation has reignited deep concerns over women’s safety in Uttar Pradesh, after CCTV footage surfaced showing a burqa-clad woman being assaulted in broad daylight in Moradabad’s Gol Kothi Wali Gali area. The accused, identified as Adil Saifi, was arrested following a police encounter in which he was shot in the leg while trying to flee.
The video, which quickly went viral on social media, shows the woman walking alone when the accused approaches from behind and forcibly gropes her chest. Startled but courageous, the woman resists and manages to push him away, forcing him to flee the scene. The disturbing footage sparked a wave of outrage across the country, with citizens demanding accountability and safety for women in public spaces.
Police registered a case immediately after the video emerged and launched a manhunt. According to officials, Adil Saifi attempted to escape on a motorcycle and was shot in the leg during a brief encounter with police. He was subsequently arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment.
In a video taken at the hospital, Saifi is seen pleading for forgiveness and promising not to repeat his actions. However, authorities confirmed that strict legal action will follow, and no leniency will be shown.
Public Outrage Over Women’s Safety
This incident has once again raised serious questions about the safety of women in India. Women’s rights activists and local residents alike have expressed horror at the audacity of the assault and emphasized the need for both preventive policing and broader societal reform.
The case drew widespread attention online, many demanded justice and stricter punishments for crimes against women, regardless of religious or social background.
Response From Police Administration
Responding to mounting public pressure, Moradabad Police took swift action and shared updates via social platform X (formerly Twitter), stating:
‘The Nagfani police acted immediately on the viral video. The accused has been arrested after an encounter. Women’s safety is our top priority.’
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to the ‘Nari Suraksha’ (Women’s Protection) mission under the current administration and assured that fast-track proceedings will be initiated in the case.
While police action in this case has been swift and assertive, the incident underscores the ongoing threat that women face even in public spaces. As the case moves forward, it is a stark reminder that women’s security must go beyond reactive justice and be embedded in daily enforcement, education, and social accountability.
