In a deeply disturbing incident from Bengaluru, Karnataka, a young college student has accused the owner of her Paying Guest (PG) accommodation of sexual assault. The accused, identified as Ashraf, has been arrested following the student’s formal complaint. The case is now under active investigation, with the police assuring a fair and swift process. Meanwhile, the incident has triggered widespread anger among local residents, many of whom are demanding exemplary punishment and stronger safeguards for women living away from home.
Victim’s Brave Account
The student had moved into Ashraf’s PG just 10 days prior to the incident. On the night of August 2, 2025, at around 12:41 AM, Ashraf approached her with an inappropriate and coercive demand, stating that she would only continue to receive food and shelter if she ‘cooperated’ with him. When she refused, he reportedly grabbed her hand, forcibly dragged her into a car, and drove her to another location. There, she says, he sexually assaulted her.
‘I said no. I tried to resist, but he forced me into a car and took me to a room where he violated me’, the student recounted in her complaint. Her courage to recount the traumatic details serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability many women face, even in spaces that are meant to be safe.
Despite the trauma, the student attempted to send her location to a friend during the incident, though she was unable to follow through. Between 1:30 AM and 2:15 AM, the accused reportedly brought her back to the PG. Out of shock and fear, she remained silent through the night. But by morning, she found the courage to walk into the local police station and file the complaint against Ashraf; a step that many victims find difficult due to fear of stigma and lack of support.
Her decision to come forward is not just an act of personal bravery but it is a quiet but powerful assertion of her agency.
Public Outrage
The police acted promptly, arresting Ashraf and initiating an investigation. The survivor has undergone a medical examination, and authorities have promised that the case will be handled with urgency and fairness.
The incident has stirred deep outrage among the public, especially among women’s rights groups and student communities in the area. Local residents are not only calling for strict legal action against the accused but are also demanding improved safety measures for young women living in hostels and PG accommodations.
This case highlights a larger, pressing issue of how easily the safety and dignity of women can be threatened, particularly when they are away from their families in pursuit of education or livelihood. While the legal process will take its course, this moment also calls for society to reflect on how women’s personal space, consent, and dignity must be respected unconditionally.
The courage of the survivor should serve as a catalyst, not just for justice in this specific case, but for reinforcing a culture where women are safe, supported, and treated with the respect they rightfully deserve.
