Five Bangladeshi illegal immigrants were arrested by the Delhi police on Tuesday for allegedly trying to ‘forcibly’ enter the Red Fort premises, where security has been intensified ahead of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
According to reports, the accused have been identified as daily wage labourers, all men, aged between 20 and 25. The five individuals failed to produce valid entry passes during routine checks and were found to be residing in the country illegally.
The arrests were made near the Red Fort’s access control point by a police team deployed in the area.
“5 Bangladeshi nationals who tried to enter the Red Fort premises are all illegal immigrants. The age of all of them is around 20-25 years, and they work as labourers in Delhi,” said the police.
The Police further said, “We recovered some Bangladeshi documents from them. Nothing suspicious found. Currently, they are being interrogated.”
As per reports, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North District), Raja Banthiya, said the five were intercepted by police personnel on August 4.
It was discovered that they had entered India illegally about three to four months ago and were working as labourers in Delhi.
“They claimed they were unaware that the Red Fort has been closed for the public since July 15. Bangladeshi documents were recovered from them, but no suspicious material or activity came to light during their interrogation,” Banthiya added.
The incident occurred amid a heightened security clampdown across the capital in preparation for the 78th Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
As part of the ongoing measures, Delhi Police has launched a special drive to identify and deport illegal immigrants, with a focus on those residing near sensitive installations.
Officials confirmed that the five individuals have also been questioned by central agencies and are currently undergoing deportation procedures in accordance with legal protocols.
