For far too long, schoolchildren in India were forced to read glorified tales of Mughal and Muslim invaders who destroyed temples, looted wealth, and suppressed the native Hindu population. These narratives overshadowed the real heroes who contributed to the civilizational ethos of Bharat. But now, a historic correction is being made. NCERT‘s revised Class 8 English textbook titled ‘Poorvi’ marks a pivotal shift: students will now engage with stories of courage, science, wit, and service from India’s own icons. This is more than a syllabus change it is a reclaiming of our cultural narrative.
Rooted in Bharat: A Textbook Inspired by Indian Thought
As part of the broader reforms under the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023, NCERT has unveiled the new Class 8 English textbook Poorvi. The book replaces Eurocentric content with indigenous stories and figures who embody Indian values, spirit, and legacy. According to NCERT, the new book is structured around five thematic units: wit and wisdom, values and dispositions, mystery and magic, environment, and science and curiosity.
In a break from the colonial hangover of previous textbooks, Poorvi features narratives drawn from Indian knowledge systems, folk traditions, and scientific achievements. Among the luminaries showcased are Major Somnath Sharma, India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee; Verghese Kurien, the Milk Man of India who transformed the dairy sector; and Bibha Chowdhuri, India’s first woman particle physicist. Their inclusion signals a decisive turn toward presenting role models that are rooted in Bharat.
Themes That Speak to Students’ Lives and Realities
The thematic approach of Poorvi is aimed at connecting learning with real-life experiences. The unit on “Wit and Wisdom” includes tales of Tenali Rama, using folklore to teach intelligence and problem-solving. The “Values and Dispositions” section tells the inspiring story of Major Somnath Sharma’s bravery at the Battle of Badgam and includes an excerpt from Verghese Kurien’s autobiography I Too Had a Dream, which highlights the importance of selfless service.
“Mystery and Magic” taps into students’ imagination through creative writing and poetry, while “Environment” features works by Indian writers like Ruskin Bond and Sarojini Naidu, focusing on nature and ecological awareness. Finally, the “Science and Curiosity” section includes a chapter on Bibha Chowdhuri, encouraging girls to pursue STEM fields by showing how Indian women have contributed to scientific progress.
Celebrating Indian Knowledge, Gender Sensitivity, and Inclusion
Poorvi also seeks to integrate cross-cutting values like gender sensitivity, inclusion, and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). For example, the inclusion of Bibha Chowdhuri not only promotes scientific inquiry but also challenges gender stereotypes in science. Similarly, ecological themes and folk narratives underscore India’s long-standing traditions of sustainability and harmony with nature.
The book makes a conscious attempt to reflect the diversity and depth of Indian heritage. It draws from regional languages, cultural practices, and traditions that were often marginalised in older curricula. In doing so, it cultivates empathy, critical thinking, and aesthetic appreciation in learners while instilling national pride.
Why ‘Poorvi’? A Raga of Cultural Resonance
The title Poorvi itself has cultural significance. Named after an Indian classical raga, the word evokes serenity and introspection. The textbook notes that “each raga in Indian music carries its own emotional significance, evoking a sense of calmness and contemplation in the journey of learners.” This connection with Indian classical music underlines the book’s commitment to fusing tradition with modern education.
The rollout of Poorvi is part of a broader, phased curriculum overhaul. After new books for Classes 1 and 2 were introduced in 2023 and Classes 3 and 6 in 2024, the year 2025 sees the launch of textbooks for Classes 4, 5, 7, and 8. The reform is not just academic but ideological, asserting an educational philosophy that places India’s civilisational values at its core.
Towards a Nationalistic, Truthful Education
The release of Poorvi marks a watershed moment in Indian education. No longer will students be subjected to a one-sided version of history that praises invaders and neglects real Indian heroes. With the focus now on valor, wisdom, science, and service, Poorvi lays the foundation for a new generation of Indians who understand and appreciate their roots. This is not just about literature or language education; it is about national identity and pride. As India strides confidently into Amrit Kaal, educational reforms like Poorvi will ensure that the youth carry forward a truthful, inspiring, and Bharat-centric worldview.
