Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore whose brutal murder during his honeymoon in Meghalaya stunned the nation earlier this year, his family has given their consent for a feature film based on the incident. Titled ‘Honeymoon in Shillong,’ the film is currently in pre-production and will explore the events leading up to the murder, the police investigation that followed, and the shocking arrests, including that of Raja’s own wife.
A Shuddering Crime That Gripped the Nation
In May 2025, Raja Raghuvanshi travelled to Meghalaya with his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, for their honeymoon. What was meant to be a celebratory getaway ended in horror. Days into the trip, Raja was reported missing. On June 2, his body was discovered in a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra region of Cherrapunji. The location, known for its natural beauty, became the scene of a tragic and complex criminal investigation.
Police later arrested eight individuals, including Sonam and her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, accusing them of plotting and executing Raja’s murder.
Family Gives Green Light for Film Adaptation
Raja’s family has now agreed to let filmmakers bring the story to the screen. His brother Sachin Raghuvanshi explained the decision, stating, ‘We gave our consent for the upcoming film on the murder case. We believe that if we do not bring the story of my brother’s murder on the big screen, people will not be able to know who was right and who was wrong.’
Another brother, Vipin, added that the family wants the film to not only highlight the emotional and legal complexities of the case but also offer a respectful portrayal of Meghalaya, where the crime took place. ‘We also want the movie to show a true and fair picture of Meghalaya,’ he said.
Director Cautions Against Deceit
The film is being directed by SP Nimbawat, who described the project as a stark reminder of the dangers of betrayal and hidden relationships. ‘Through our film, we want to give a message to the public that such incidents of betrayal should be stopped,’ he said.
According to Nimbawat, the script has been finalized, and filming is scheduled to begin soon. Eighty percent of the film will be shot in Indore, with the remaining 20 percent set in various Meghalaya locations, including areas near where the crime occurred. Details about the cast have not yet been disclosed.
Turning Tragedy into a Message
The real-life murder case had gripped the public’s attention with its shocking revelations: a newlywed husband allegedly lured to his death by his wife and her lover, under the guise of a honeymoon. As the story transitions from news headlines to the cinematic screen, the film aims to not only recount the events but also spark conversations around trust, deception, and justice.
With the blessing of the victim’s family, ‘Honeymoon in Shillong’ promises to be a powerful retelling of one of India’s most disturbing recent true crimes.
