In a disturbing turn of events, Monojit Mishra, a former student leader from Kolkata who once publicly demanded the death penalty for rapists, has now been arrested in a brutal gang-rape case.
In August 2024, Mishra made headlines after he posted on social media calling for capital punishment for those accused in the RG Kar Medical College rape case. He had written, “We want justice, not drama. The rapist must be hanged.”
Almost a year later, Mishra finds himself at the center of a similar case, accused of leading the gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student on the campus of South Calcutta Law College.
What Happened
The incident occurred on the evening of June 25. According to police reports, the student was forcibly taken inside the college and assaulted in the security guard’s room. Three men were allegedly involved in the crime—Monojit Mishra, and two current students, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed. The college security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, is also accused of assisting them.
CCTV footage reportedly captures the victim being dragged into the building. The assault is said to have lasted for several hours, between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM.
Evidence Collected
The Special Investigation Team has reviewed over seven hours of surveillance footage, which includes 42 separate video clips. The footage reportedly confirms the survivor’s claims.
Authorities have also found key physical evidence at the scene, including liquor bottles, strands of hair, and a hockey stick. A short video from one of the accused’s phones appears to show part of the assault and may have been used to intimidate the victim.
Criminal History of the Main Accused
Police have revealed that Monojit Mishra is a repeat offender with a long criminal record. Between 2013 and 2024, he was named in at least 7 to 11 police cases involving charges like harassment, assault, theft, and threats.
Despite this, Mishra held considerable influence on campus. He allegedly controlled student admissions, manipulated elections, and maintained power through threats and political connections.
College and Government Response
In response to the case, South Calcutta Law College has suspended classes indefinitely. The institution has also sealed off the areas where the assault occurred. Disciplinary proceedings are underway, including expulsion of Mishra and suspension of other involved students.
The West Bengal education department has ordered a full investigation. At least 17 more students are being questioned.
Political Fallout
The case has caused political tension in the state. Mishra’s past association with the ruling party’s student wing, the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad, has drawn sharp criticism. The party has since distanced itself from Mishra, stating he is no longer affiliated.
The Calcutta High Court has also taken note of the case and may call for a CBI investigation if state authorities do not conduct a thorough inquiry.
Current Status
Four individuals have been arrested: Monojit Mishra, Pramit Mukherjee, Zaib Ahmed, and the college’s security guard.
The investigation continues, with multiple witnesses and students under scrutiny.
Forensic testing and analysis of digital evidence are ongoing.
Why This Case Matters
The case has highlighted systemic issues within campus safety and the unchecked power of politically connected individuals in educational institutions. Public outrage continues to grow, with calls for accountability not just for this crime, but for the culture of impunity that allowed it to happen.
