An Indian-origin man, Gaurav Kundi, is in a coma and on life support after a forceful arrest by police in South Australia that has sparked outrage and drawn comparisons to the George Floyd case in the U.S.
The 42-year-old was detained by police on the morning of May 20 on Payneham Road in Royston Park, a suburb in Adelaide. According to his partner, Amritpal Kaur, the arrest turned violent when officers allegedly pinned Kundi to the ground, slammed his head against a car, and one officer reportedly knelt on his neck.
Kundi became unresponsive during the arrest and was rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he remains in critical condition with serious injuries to his brain and neck.
Investigation Launched
The South Australia Police Commissioner, Grant Stevens, has ordered an internal review known as a “Commissioner’s Inquiry” to determine whether the officers involved followed proper protocol. Eight officers were reportedly part of the arrest, all wearing body cameras at the time. Despite the gravity of the incident, all officers remain on active duty while the investigation is underway.
In parallel, both the Major Crime and Internal Investigations branches are conducting separate probes into the matter.
Public Outcry and Comparison to George Floyd
The case has provoked a strong response from both the Indian diaspora and civil rights groups in Australia. Many have drawn disturbing similarities between Kundi’s arrest and the 2020 death of George Floyd in the U.S., which sparked a global reckoning on police violence.
Protests and calls for justice have emerged, with community leaders demanding transparency and accountability from law enforcement.
Family Speaks Out
Amritpal Kaur, who witnessed the entire episode, has publicly appealed for justice. She insists that her husband posed no threat and did not resist arrest. She described the police actions as “cruel and excessive,” adding that the couple’s children are devastated by their father’s condition.
“We need answers. We need justice,” she said in an emotional statement.
What Happens Next
As public pressure mounts, authorities have promised a thorough investigation. Advocates are also calling for broader reforms in police training and use-of-force policies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The community is now watching closely as investigators examine whether excessive force was used—and whether anyone will be held accountable.
