In a significant step toward bolstering India’s defence self-reliance and modernization, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army have jointly initiated the development of a next generation weapon the Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbine. This state-of-the-art firearm is tailored for combat in tight, confined spaces, especially in urban warfare environments where traditional weaponry may be cumbersome or ineffective.
The CQB Carbine is designed with compactness and lightweight maneuverability as its core strengths. Built for close-range engagements, it offers enhanced ease of handling, allowing soldiers to respond swiftly and accurately in fast-paced combat scenarios. Its ergonomic design ensures that troops can carry the weapon for extended periods with minimal fatigue, making it ideal for missions in densely populated areas, narrow alleyways, and indoor operations conditions where quick reflexes and mobility are essential.
Recognizing its operational value, the Indian Army has officially adopted the CQB Carbine into its arsenal and placed a significant production order worth approximately ₹2,000 crore. The manufacturing of this weapon will be undertaken by DRDO in collaboration with Bharat Forge, one of India’s leading private-sector defence manufacturers. This move marks a critical push toward strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative.
The project is expected to significantly reduce the country’s dependence on imported arms, while also accelerating the incorporation of advanced technologies and innovations into India’s defence infrastructure. It signals a strategic shift toward developing homegrown, high-tech weaponry suited to the unique operational demands of Indian forces.
Once fully deployed, the CQB Carbine is set to enhance the combat readiness and tactical efficiency of Indian soldiers, particularly in close-quarter battle scenarios where agility and precision are paramount. Experts believe this weapon could be a game-changer in counter-insurgency operations and modern urban warfare.
The partnership between DRDO and Bharat Forge is being hailed as a landmark in India’s journey toward advanced defence manufacturing. It not only reflects the growing synergy between the public and private sectors in strategic defence projects but also lays the groundwork for future innovations in indigenous weapons development.
This initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in redefining India’s military preparedness and technological autonomy in the coming years.
