A newly raised alert by Pakistan’s intelligence agency states that there are threats to foreign nationals attending the ICC Champions Trophy. The report states that the abductions could be organized by many terrorist groups like Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and various groups based in Balochistan. As per reports, terrorist groups could kidnap foreign spectators and officials during the cricketing tournament.
The ICC Champions Trophy is currently being played in a hybrid format in Pakistan. This was supposed to be a significant development for the Islamic nation as it is hosting an ICC event after almost three decades. The spectators include international visitors, players, and officials from around the world.
After intelligence reports, Pakistani authorities are deploying heavy security for all participants and attendees. Enhanced protocols will include monitoring and surveillance, deployment of tactical equipment, and coordination with other security agencies to minimize the threat.
Terrorist groups like Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan TTP and the Islamic State have often targeted domestic and international interests alike in the area. However, the Islamic nation is itself to blame for this mess as this menace is its own making as it follows a notorious policy of using terror as a state policy. But in Balochistan, Pakistan has been facing backless from nationalist voices and armed groups who want to end the cycle of Pakistani oppression of the native Baloch people and the exploitation of its resources for the selfish greed and fattening of the Pakistani army and its Punjab province.
The terror threat around the Cricketing tournament recounts the horror of earlier infamous incident when the bus of the touring side Sri Lanka was targeted by terrorist groups in 2009. The development underscores fears about the safety of international sporting events in Pakistan as it continues to be the safe haven for terrorism.
