The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has implemented various women welfare schemes through its Department of Women and Child Development. These aim to make women safer and more empowered and develop better welfare conditions in every sphere of their lives. Here is a look at the important schemes.
Chief Minister Kanya Sumangala Yojana
The girl child welfare scheme is another recent initiative, launched in 2019. It provides financial help to families of girl children with an encouraging attitude towards them, reducing the financial burden to a great extent. All beneficiaries must be permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh, and their annual family income should not exceed Rs 3 lakh. Direct financial support is made through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) in the beneficiary’s bank account. It is designed to help girl children at all possible stages of their education and development toward equality and opportunity.
181 Women Helpline
181 Women Helpline: The helpline is a toll-free 24/7 service that offers help to women who are under violence or require emergency help. It provides immediate support by providing ambulance services, counseling from protection officers, and directing the victims to relevant facilities. Thus, the helpline is to aid women in distress by getting them timely intervention and accessing resources for their safety and well-being.
Mahila Shakti Kendra Scheme
It is being implemented in 71 districts, where the Mahila Shakti Kendra Scheme is to spread awareness among women about critical issues like domestic violence, dowry, education, health rights, and gender-based violence. It connects rural women and adolescent girls to government schemes and services. The scheme serves as a cooperative mechanism to efficiently operationalize the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, thus scaling it up and spreading it more widely.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao
This flagship scheme focuses on the survival, protection, and education of the girl child by doing away with gender discrimination. This flagship program works on altering attitudes in society toward girls by empowering them through increased access to education and healthcare. Mass awareness campaigns combined with actionable support bring about the root cause change in gender inequality.
Government Women’s Refuge/Protection Home
The UP government has opened women’s shelters or protection homes in 12 districts, including Agra, Gorakhpur, Mathura, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Lucknow. The facilities provide safe residential accommodations for women in distress and offer free food, clothing, healthcare, education, and skill development training. These homes aim to rehabilitate women and help them reintegrate into society with dignity and independence.
Legal Aid for Women Suffering from Dowry Harassment
This scheme provides free legal aid of Rs 2,500 to prosecute cases of women abandoned or harassed due to dowry. The scheme is open to women living below the poverty line so that no financial constraint would come in the way of access to justice. The scheme is subject to approval by the District Magistrate, which again points to its targeted support for the most vulnerable.
Uttar Pradesh Rani Laxmi Bai Women and Children Samman Kosh
This initiative is geared toward uplifting women and children in distressed situations, primarily to render them financial and social services. The program reflects how the government stands by to protect the rights of the women and foster an ambiance that is comprehensive and considers their growth and empowerment process.
Shelters and Protection for Destitute and Elderly Women
Destitute and aged women have been provided with special shelters to ensure their safe habitat. Such facilities provide food, clothing, and other health care services free to the people. Such steps reflect the sincerity of the government towards society at all levels.
Working Women’s Hostel
The state also provides hostels to working women. This provides safety and affordability to the place of living. These help women to maintain a balance in their professional and personal lives and enable an environment for better growth in their careers.
Thus, these initiatives by the Uttar Pradesh government address multi-dimensional challenges for women: their safety, empowerment, and overall development. These programs thus illustrate the proactive stand of the state in fostering a safe and equitable environment for women.
