Petrol Bomb thrown at Maa Durga Idol in Bangladesh

Ever since Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down and Muhammad Yunus took over Bangladesh, reports from across Bangladesh paint a grim picture of the situation for Hindu communities, who are being constantly targeted because of their religious identity.

On the 11th of October amid Durga Puja celebrations, petrol bomb was thrown at a Durga Puja mandap in the Tanti Bazar neighbourhood in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. The CCTV footage showed a group of youths coming from the adjacent lane, hurling the petrol bomb at Maa Durga Idol and running through the side gate. When the Hindu devotees present attempted to intervene, the assailants assaulted them with knives before making their escape. As a result, five individuals—comprising four volunteers and one visitor—sustained injuries in the stabbing incident.

While Vijay Shah, the general secretary of the Tatinbazar Puja Committee mentioned that the petrol bomb caught fire but did not explode and was immediately extinguished, the police are trying to downplay the incident of throwing petrol bombs at Maa Durga idol.

Jhatu Dhar, Deepto Dey, Khokon Dhar, Sagar Ghosh and Mohammad Rameez Uddin are the ones who got injured and were sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital for treatment. The police have apprehended the two suspects, identified as Mohammed Hridoy and Mohammed Jibon.
