India set to acquire 26 Rafale M Aircraft from France for Navy

India and France have just concluded a key defense treaty. The contract is to acquire 26 Rafale M aircraft for the Indian Navy in this Financial year as per reports. After some rounds of extensive discussion, France agreed to cut the price, thus making the purchase cheaper. The total deal is worth more than Rs 50,000 crores and is expected to be closed by the end of 2024.

The new aircraft will bring an extra edge to India’s naval power on its aircraft carriers. They are meant to substitute the old MiG-29K fighters, which are in operation in the Navy. The order includes 22 single-seat aircraft and four twin-seater trainer models. This is the second time India has bought Rafale jets, the first being in 2016 when 36 planes were purchased for the Air Force. The naval fighter acquisition as well as an order for three additional Kalvari class submarines to be built in Mumbai are the two major defence deals being processed with France.

Rafale; 4.5 Gen Fighter Jets

Rafale M is a dual-engine, multi-role jet aircraft that is specially engineered for naval operation. It is capable of bearing sophisticated ammunition, amongst which are Meteor air-to-air missiles as well as anti-ship weapons. These jets also have additional long-range aircraft fuel systems enabling flying missions that last longer without refueling. The jets, having both agility and the source of power, are used in several roles including the land and the sea battles.

India’s acquisition of these aircraft consolidates its connection with France in defense. It likewise supports India’s ambitions to strengthen up local defense manufacturing. It is a part of the country’s broader strategy of strengthening its navy and making defense self-sufficient. India has also filed a request for “Make in India” parts with France, which is a good precursor of things to come in India’s defense field.

This clear-cut procurement will supply the Indian Navy with an upper hand as it will get the most advanced aerial vehicles which are very versatile and can take part in numerous types of missions. As its completion is just around the corner, this becomes the very first step in the plan for India to construct a riverine defense resource that is both powerful and skilled.
