In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the nation, an Army officer and his fiancée has been subjected to a horrifying ordeal of abuse, molestation, and illegal detention at the hands of Bhubaneswar police. This appalling event, which occurred on September 15, 2024, at the Bharatpur Police Station, has exposed a deep-rooted culture of misconduct and abuse of power within the law enforcement system.
However, the Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania on Tuesday ordered a Crime Branch probe following allegations of custodial misconduct and molestation of an Army Major’s fiancée at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar.
A Night of Terror Unfolds
What began as a routine complaint about rash driving quickly spiraled into a nightmare for an Army officer & his fiancé. The couple, seeking help after being harassed by a group of individuals on the road, found themselves at the mercy of corrupt and abusive police officers.
Upon arrival at the police station around 1:30 AM, the couple was met with indifference and hostility. Instead of receiving assistance, they were subjected to a series of increasingly violent and degrading acts:
Verbal Abuse: Officers, including a lady SI, hurled vulgar insults at Officer’s fiancé, using derogatory language and making lewd comments about her character.
Illegal Detention: The officer was stripped of his belongings and thrown into a cell without any legal justification.
Physical Assault: Officer’s fiancé was brutally attacked by multiple officers, resulting in severe injuries including a dislocated jaw and broken nose.
Sexual Harassment and Attempted Rape: In a horrifying turn of events, Officer’s fiancé was forcibly stripped, molested, and threatened with rape by the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC).
A Systemic Failure of Justice:
This incident is not merely a case of individual misconduct but a damning indictment of the entire police system in Bhubaneswar. The fact that multiple officers, including senior officials, participated in or condoned these actions points to a culture of impunity and disregard for citizens’ rights.
The attempts to cover up the incident, including falsifying medical reports and filing fake charges against the victims, further highlight the depths of corruption within the force.
This incident in Bhubaneswar is not an isolated case but part of a troubling trend of violence and abuse against Army personnel. Just ten days earlier, a similar case of assault on two Army officer & their female friend in Mhow had surfaced, highlighting a disturbing pattern of disregard for the safety and dignity of those who serve the nation.
The repeated attacks on Army personnel outside of cantt areas raise critical questions: If members of the armed forces are not safe in civilian spaces, how can ordinary citizens expect to be secure? The mental and physical harassment faced by these officers not only undermines their well-being but also casts doubt on their ability to effectively protect the nation’s borders and maintain security. The trauma inflicted on Officer & his fiancé cannot be overstated. These two individuals, who turned to the police for protection, instead found themselves victims of unimaginable cruelty. The psychological scars from this incident will likely haunt them for years to come.
“They went to the police for help, but they treated them worse than criminals. Is this how our country treats its soldiers and citizens?” – (an officer of Indian Army told TFI)
This incident demands an immediate and comprehensive response:
Independent Investigation: A thorough, impartial investigation must be conducted by an external agency to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.
Suspension of Involved Officers: All officers implicated in this incident should be immediately suspended pending the investigation’s outcome.
Police Reform: This case highlights the urgent need for comprehensive police reform, including better training, stricter accountability measures, and improved oversight mechanisms.
Support for Victims: The victims must receive full support, including medical care, psychological counselling, and legal assistance.
