India marked its 75th Republic Day with a vibrant celebration, showcasing the nation’s achievements under the themes “Viksit Bharat” and “Bharat — Loktantra ki matrika.” The Republic Day Parade, a grand event, unfolded at the Kartavya Path, highlighting India’s role as a nurturer of democracy. 75th Republic Day Celebration
The Republic Day Parade kicked off at 10:30 am at the Kartavya Path, with a seating capacity of 77,000. Notably, 42,000 seats were reserved for the general public. The parade, lasting approximately 90 minutes, began uniquely with 100 women artists playing traditional Indian musical instruments, a departure from the conventional military band opening.
In a groundbreaking move, two French Rafale fighter jets and a multi-role tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft participated in the flypast, emphasizing international collaboration. A 95-member French marching contingent and a 33-member band contingent added a global touch to the festivities.
For the first time, a 144-member tri-service women contingent, along with all-women contingents from Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), marched proudly. Special guests, including Indian patent and copyright holders, were invited to witness the parade, aligning with the government’s vision of ‘Jan Bhagidari.’ Sarpanches of vibrant villages, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan workers, electronic manufacturing sector representatives, and other notable individuals graced the occasion.
The parade featured 25 tableaux from 16 States and UTs, along with nine ministries and departments. Anant Sutra, an endless thread comprising nearly 1,900 sarees and drapes from across the country, showcased India’s cultural diversity. The Indian Air Force’s C-295 medium transport aircraft, inducted in September of the previous year, made its debut flyover at Kartavya Path.
Remembering First Republic Day
Recalling the inaugural Republic Day parade on January 26, 1950, adds a historical perspective to the 75th celebration. The Ceremonial Parade held at the Irwin Amphitheatre, now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium was commanded by Brigadier J S Dhillon. Lieutenant Commander Indar Singh led the Naval component, while the Air Force contingent, dressed in blue service dress, was commanded by Squadron Leader V M Radhakrishnan and Squadron Leader J P Shukla.
The parade showcased various contingents, including the 2nd Punjab Boys Battalion and the Delhi Police contingent. President Dr. Rajendra Prasad presided over the ceremony, with a salute of 31 guns and a ‘Feu-de-joie’ marking the occasion. The massed bands, led by Bur Singh, provided a musical finale to the parade, symbolizing the dawn of a new era in India’s history.
