Looks like the sun has risen from the West, at least in the context of Kashmir. Just when the world was entangled in the Israel and Hamas conflict, Shehla Rashid Shora, the former poster girl of communists, had something to say. And surprisingly, it was for the better.
In her recent post, she wrote, “Looking at the events in the Middle East, today I realize how lucky we are as Indians. The Indian Army and security forces have sacrificed their everything for our safety. Credit where it’s due.” Yes, you read that right. But Shehla had more to say.

Former JNU alumna Shehla Rashid also noted that peace can’t be ensured without security, and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East underscores this fact. She added that the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army, along with the brave soldiers of the CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police, have made tremendous sacrifices to ensure long-term peace and security in Kashmir.

Now, let’s hit the rewind button for a moment. In the past, Shehla had an illustrious career in peddling fake news and spreading anti-India rhetoric in Kashmir. Notably, she has previously served as the former vice-president of the JNU student union and did politics on behalf of AISA, the student organization of left parties.
Back then, she made regular statements against BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even resorting to fake news peddling on many instances to paint a false narrative of Muslims being victimized in Jammu and Kashmir by the ‘oppressive’ Indian Armed forces. She even challenged the government in a mocking tone to repeal the contentious Article 370, which had been a thorn in the side of Kashmir since 1947.
So, what might be the reason for this sudden change of heart? Shehla Rashid’s change of heart comes just days after the Delhi LG granted sanction for a case against her over her comments spreading fake news. Supreme Court lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava had filed a criminal complaint against Shehla Rashid for her comments, seeking her arrest for allegedly spreading fake news against the Indian Army and the government.
In connection to her baseless tweets against the Indian army, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, on 10th January this year, granted prosecution sanction against Shehla Rashid. This allowed the prosecution to charge her under section 196 of CrPC, 1973, for her tweets against the Indian Army. The same has also been done for Arundhati Roy, a novelist by day and a propagandist by night!
It seems the looming legal action has prompted Shehla Rashid to change her tune. She might have realized that spreading fake news and sowing discord is a dangerous game. When the consequences start knocking on your door, it’s hard not to take a step back and reevaluate your stance.
This change of heart is indeed a surprising twist in Shehla Rashid’s story. Her acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by the Indian Army and security forces in ensuring the safety of the people in the region is a welcome one. It’s a reminder that, in the grand scheme of things, peace and security are vital ingredients for any thriving society.
While her past may be checkered with controversial statements and fake news peddling, there’s always room for redemption. Perhaps this change in perspective can pave the way for a more constructive and balanced approach to issues related to Kashmir and national security. It’s a stark reminder that even the most vocal critics can have a change of heart when faced with the consequences of their actions.
