Israel Halts UN Visas: What do you do if someone attempts to justify an attack on your own home? You would either ignore that chap, or if he/she continues to pester, then you would ensure that the person gets the lesson of a lifetime!
Well, Israel went a step further and announced an open boycott of the United Nations, denying any member of the organization a visa to Israel until they publicly apologize for attempting to justify the terror attacks on Israel.
During a UN Security Council meeting on the Israel-Hamas war, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres tried to contextualize the Hamas terror attack by saying, “it is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum.” That’s like The New York Times attempting to justify how India invited the carnage that followed the Partition, or how Hindu nationalism was responsible for the attacks of 26/11.
Preposterous and unacceptable at the very least!
Gilad Erdan, the country’s representative to the organization, called the statements “shocking” and insisted that the secretary-general step down. A meeting between Guterres and Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, who is visiting the US, was also called off, and former Minister of Defense Benny Gantz called the UN chief a “terror apologist.”
Israel has now refused to grant visas to UN officials in light of the development. Erdan said that the time has come to teach them a lesson, adding that one UN top official was already denied a visa to visit Israel as retaliation for the comments of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “Due to his remarks, we will refuse to issue visas to UN representatives. We have already refused a visa for Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths. The time has come to teach them a lesson,” highlighted the UN Ambassador.
However, this is not the only step taken against anyone trying to glorify the horrific deeds of Hamas. Harvard University is already having a tough time, thanks to their students’ attempts at justifying the terror attacks.
In fact, Greta Thunberg, the self-declared eco warrior, almost celebrated the attacks, thanks to which Israel has issued a decree to remove any positive reference about this person in their school textbooks.
The foreign minister of Israel announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he was postponing a scheduled meeting with Antonio Guterres. He had flown to New York to participate in the meetings regarding the present dispute. “There is no place for an even-handed approach. Hamas needs to be wiped off the face of the earth,” he wrote after the horrific events of 7 October.
Israel’s response to attempts to justify terror attacks is resolute and unapologetic. It’s a stance that emphasizes the gravity of such justifications and the importance of holding those who endorse or excuse acts of terror accountable.
