Rahul Sharma: A true symbol of Sanatana Dharma

Rahul Sharma: In a nation often rocked by disturbing incidents, the Ujjain case sent shockwaves through the collective consciousness of India. The sexual assault on a girl and the bystanders who chose to ignore her plight left a bitter taste in our mouths. But amid this tale of despair, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of a local priest.

As the incident in Ujjain unfolded, politicians and media hawks swooped in, eager to exploit the situation for their own gains. They sought to use this tragedy to further their agendas, painting a bleak picture of society. However, amidst this cacophony, the story of a local priest quietly came to light, offering a refreshing perspective on humanity and the values upheld by followers of Sanatan Dharma, known to the world as Hinduism.

A widely circulated cartoon sketch by Times of India’s Chief Cartoonist, Sandeep Adhwaryu, depicted Hindus worshipping a cow while the injured girl walked past, seeking help from indifferent locals. The cartoon seemed to suggest that people prioritized their reverence for the cow over assisting a fellow human being in distress:

However, the cartoon missed a crucial detail—the girl was indeed helped by a Hindu priest named Rahul Sharma. The victim, battered and bleeding, had walked approximately 8 kilometers through the streets of Ujjain desperately seeking aid, but to no avail.

Finally, she reached the vicinity of Dandi Ashram on Badnagar Road in the city, where Rahul Sharma came to her rescue. He not only offered her clothes but also promptly called for emergency medical assistance and informed the police. It was his compassionate and timely intervention that ensured the girl received the help she so urgently needed.

Unlike the propaganda spread by our Hindi films, there was no father Stan or Khan Chacha coming to the rescue. Instead, it was a devout practitioner of Sanatan Dharma—a profession often unfairly vilified—who emerged as the real-life hero, ensuring that justice prevailed.

Rahul Sharma, recounting the harrowing incident to NDTV, said, “I gave her my clothes. She was bleeding. She could not speak. Her eyes were swollen. I called 100. When I could not reach the cops over the helpline, I contacted the Mahakal police station and informed them about the situation. Police reached the ashram in about 20 minutes.”

This act of kindness, bravery, and humanity by Rahul Sharma stands as a testament to the values upheld by followers of Sanatan Dharma. It reminds us that true spirituality is not limited to rituals and customs; it encompasses compassion, empathy, and a commitment to justice. In the face of adversity, Rahul Sharma exemplified these principles.

Reflecting on a similar incident from the past, where a girl was sexually assaulted and murdered in Kathua in 2018, the local police hastily implicated the chief priest of a temple and other Sanatanis, sparking outrage among the local community. Journalists with vested interests and Bollywood celebrities launched a smear campaign against Sanatanis under the banner “I am Hindustan, I am Ashamed.” This unjust vilification of an entire community based on the actions of a few tarnished the principles of justice and fairness.

Today, Rahul Sharma’s noble act serves as a powerful rebuke to such opportunists who have spared no effort to denigrate Sanatan Dharma and its followers. It shatters the false narrative that has been perpetuated, revealing the true spirit of compassion and humanity that resides within the hearts of many.
