Unacademy, a prominent e-learning platform, has once again stirred controversy with its recent actions, further fueling debates about its intentions and the narratives it promotes. In a series of incidents involving the expression of opinions on legal reforms, a video has gone viral, revealing the blind hatred indirectly promoted through this very platform.
The Central Government’s recent introduction of three groundbreaking legal bills has been a significant step in redefining the legal landscape of the nation. Under the banner of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and The Bharatiya Sakshya, these bills aim to replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, respectively. This move, aligned with the government’s commitment to legal reform, has sparked diverse reactions from various quarters of society.
However, amidst this discourse, an educator named Karan Sangwan, associated with the renowned e-learning platform Unacademy, made his stance on the legal reforms abundantly clear. Sangwan’s controversial video clip captured him urging students to vote for “educated politicians.” He went on to praise the British colonizers for crafting what he deemed a “beautifully drafted” statute, while criticizing the government’s decision to replace the existing legal framework.

Sangwan’s comments, which dismissively questioned the government’s ability to amend laws, have attracted considerable attention. The assertion that the British-drafted laws are irreplaceable and superior is controversial in itself. Furthermore, his call for voting for “educated politicians” while insinuating that the current government lacks understanding has raised eyebrows and led to accusations of bias and agenda-driven rhetoric.

The incident is not isolated, as Unacademy has a history of courting controversies. In 2021, the platform faced backlash for a question paper that reportedly contained content insulting to Hindus. This incident provoked outrage across social media platforms, highlighting the platform’s apparent lack of sensitivity and responsibility in its content creation and management.
Similarly, Unacademy’s involvement in sponsoring an event that derogatorily mocked the epic Ramayana during an AIIMS function also sparked condemnation. The event’s content not only crossed the boundaries of respect for cultural heritage but also raised questions about Unacademy’s choices in associating with such content.
The recurrent pattern of controversies involving Unacademy points to a troubling trend of alleged bias and insensitivity in its content and messaging. These incidents raise questions about the platform’s editorial integrity and responsibility in disseminating information and opinions, especially considering its influence over a significant student audience.
While freedom of expression is a crucial aspect of any democratic society, the manner in which opinions are presented and promoted is equally important. Unacademy’s role as an educational platform amplifies its responsibility to provide balanced, accurate, and respectful content to its users. However, reality presents another picture altogether.
Unacademy’s recent controversies involving its stance on legal reforms and its past instances of insensitive content raise important questions about its role and influence as an educational platform. The recurring pattern of alleged bias and disregard for cultural sensitivities highlights the need for responsible content creation, especially when engaging with a young, impAXressionable audience. As society progresses, the power and influence of platforms like Unacademy should be harnessed responsibly to contribute to informed, respectful, and constructive public discourse.
