JD.com Exceeds Growth Expectations in 2023 Grand Promotion

Each year on June 18, JD.com (also known as Jingdong) holds its 618 Grand Promotion to celebrate the founding of the Company. The 2023 event exceeded all growth expectations, with brand merchants enjoying fantastic results and JD.com reiterating its position as an industry leader.

A record number of online brands took part in the 2023 event.  Meanwhile, tens of thousands of JD offline stores and millions of cooperating offline stores joined the extravaganza.

More Unique Offerings Than Ever Before

The 2023 618 Grand Promotion highlighted over 80 industry-first or unique offerings and  over 200 services that enrich the JD.com shopping experience.

JD.com, or Jingdong, introduced over 1,200 new categories. These categories broadened and diversified the range of products, brands, and merchants on the platform.

While shopping, users clicked the “One-Click Price Protection” option more than 660 million times. This option guarantees users affordable, high-quality products, giving them peace of mind as they shop.

One-Click Price Protection was launched in 2008 and to date customers have saved nearly RMB 8 billion yuan using this service.  JD.com puts customers first as part of its offering.

A New Benchmark in Delivery Timescales

The company’s on-demand retail platform JDDJ teamed up with more than 380,000 offline stores to offer a one-hour delivery service during the 618 Grand Promotion. 2023 saw an 80% year-on-year increase in the number of participating stores.

As a result, over 95% of counties and districts across China had access to same- or next-day delivery during the peak period of the event.  This was a new industry benchmark for customer convenience and business efficiency.

The JD Shop Now program, offered one-hour delivery service for consumers in more than 2,000 cities, districts and counties. Shoppers in nearly 1,000 cities, districts, and counties received their orders within just 10 minutes of the event’s launch.

Smart Virtual Hosts and Customer Service

Fueled by AI technology, JD.com’s virtual hosts and smart customer service system enhanced partner brands marketing efforts during the event.

The Yanxi smart chatbot provided 24/7 customer service and supported shoppers with seamless, personalized support.  Yanxi achieved a 246% increase in transaction volume compared to 2022.

High-Quality International Products

Ambassadors from 11 countries visited JD.com’s headquarters to promote the imports of their specialty products for the event.

The Sri Lankan Ambassador recommended blue sapphire products and the Czech Republic’s Agricultural Counselor recommended honey cake, locally brewed beer, and Bohemian crystal glass crafts. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan’s Commercial Counselor recommended natural delicacies like honey and dried fruits.

To date, JD.com (Jingdong) has set up over 100 national pavilions for over 50 countries. Since opening the first national pavilion in 2014, JD.com now offers more than 5,100 specialty products in its country-specific online shops, attracting more than 100 million customers.

These online stores offer customers in China exotic specialities like Cypriot blue wine, Kazakh camel milk and Sri Lankan Ceylon tea.

The Cyprus National Pavilion also allows customers to book flights and hotels via the pavilion.

In future, customers will also be able to enjoy cultural and tourism offerings from countries like Sri Lanka, Latin America, and Malaysia.

During the 618 Grand Promotion, the total transaction volume from the national pavilions increased 4 times compared to 2022.

World leaders and diplomats have praised JD.com’s national pavilions for making high-quality, international products accessible in China.

In May 2023, President Tokayev of Kazakhstan witnessed the opening of JD.com’s Kazakhstan national pavilion in Xi’an. The Minister Counselor of the Kazakh Embassy to China was impressed that 80% of the products sold out within one hour.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani Ambassador to China congratulated Jingdong’s national pavilions for encouraging trade exchanges between China and Pakistan. He invited JD.com to further explore Pakistan’s high-quality products, such as premium mangoes and Basmati rice.

The Launch of the “35711 Vision”

At the end of the 618 Grand Promotion, Sandy Xu, JD.com’s (Jingdong) CEO, announced the launch of the company’s “35711 Vision.” This plan sets ambitious goals that Richard Liu’s JD.com will work toward over the next 20 years, which include establishing three enterprises with over RMB 1 trillion in revenue and RMB 70 billion in net profits, having five JD enterprises rank on the Fortune Global 500 list, and bringing seven publicly listed companies that started from zero obtain a market value of RMB 100 billion. JD.com also aims to contribute RMB 100 billion in taxes and create over 1 million jobs.

The 35711 Vision follows the many successes that JD.com has achieved over the past two decades, both in terms of its growth and wider societal impact.
