Upcoming Films that Prove Why Bollywood is Just a Remake Factory

Bollywood, the Hindi film industry, has long been known for its vibrant storytelling and mesmerizing performances. However, in recent years, there has been a concerning trend that suggests Bollywood has become a remake factory, churning out rehashed versions of successful films rather than investing in fresh, original content. In this article, we will discuss some upcoming films that exemplify this troubling trend and explore why it does not bode well for the industry:

Soorarai Pottru:

The national award-winning film “Soorarai Pottru,” originally starring actor Suriya, is set to soar to new heights with its official Hindi remake. Akshay Kumar, known for his versatile performances, will step into Suriya’s shoes in this gripping tale. Alongside Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Radhika Madan will play pivotal roles. Interestingly, the brains behind the original movie, i.e. Sudha Kongara and Suriya, shall be reprising their roles as director and producer respectively. LET THAT SINK IN!

Anniyan:

Director Shankar’s 2005 hit “Anniyan” impressed with its distinct narrative and captivating acting. Bollywood star Ranveer Singh was slated for the Hindi remake, but news indicates the project’s cancellation, leaving fans in suspense. With an uncertain future, eager audiences await an official update on the fate of this highly anticipated remake.

The Great Indian Kitchen:

Imagine Anubhav Sinha’s “Thappad” being remade! Did anyone ask for it? Does anyone crave for it? But apparently some super enlightened souls think that way. Hence, they’re going all guns blazing with “The Great Indian Kitchen”. Sanya Malhotra, known for her impactful performances, is all set to star in the Hindi adaptation of the critically acclaimed Malayalam film “The Great Indian Kitchen.”

Master:

Yes, another of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film is being remade in Bollywood. While rumors were rife that Salman Khan would be playing the role essayed by J. Vijay, also known as “Thalapathy”, the principal cast is yet to be decided.

Ayyapanum Koshiyum:

John Abraham, a versatile actor and producer, secures the Hindi remake rights of the Malayalam action thriller “Ayyappanum Koshiyum.” The original film, featuring the dynamic duo of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Biju Menon, received rave reviews for its gripping narrative and intense performances. While details about the Hindi remake’s cast remain under wraps, rumors suggest that John Abraham himself, along with Arjun Kapoor, will lead the charge in delivering an adrenaline-pumping cinematic experience. However, considering their previous outing in “Ek Villain Returns”, one has their own doubts.

Bawarchi:

There are some movies, that should be left as they are. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Bawarchi” is one of them. Unfortunately, for remake makers, anything that set the cash registers ringing is their catch for the day, and unfortunately “Bawarchi” will be remade again.

Koshish:

However, Hrishikesh Mukherjee is not alone. “Koshish”, the iconic movie that still counts as one of the greatest movies from Indian cinema, will be remade in a series of remakes, mostly helmed by Anushree Mehta, Abir Sengupta and Sameer Raj Sippy.

The emergence of these upcoming films as remakes reinforces the troubling notion that Bollywood is increasingly becoming a remake factory, prioritizing profit over creative originality. While remakes can be successful, the excessive reliance on this formula sends worrying signals about the industry’s ability to innovate and produce fresh content that captures the imagination of the audience. Bollywood needs to foster an environment that nurtures creativity, encourages new storytelling, and invests in fresh talent rather than relying on the past glory of successful films. Only then can the industry break free from the remake cycle and truly thrive in its own right.
