Cinema holds a special place in the hearts of Indian audiences. However, not all movies manage to strike the right chord, leaving a bitter taste in the viewers’ mouths. Here are some such cinematic disasters that were so poorly received that you wouldn’t want to watch them, even if you were given a free ticket!
Ram Gopal Varma ki “AAG” [2007]:
Ram Gopal Varma’s attempt to recreate the classic Sholay turned out to be a cinematic disaster. With hammy performances and an uninspiring screenplay, it angered fans of the original movie and is often cited as one of the worst Indian films ever made. Tees Maar Khan [2010]:
This film starring Akshay Kumar was a major letdown due to its weak storyline, over-the-top acting, and uninspiring humor. It’s a movie that moviegoers still regret watching!
Joker [2012]:
Intended as a sci-fi comedy, this Akshay Kumar starrer was anything but funny. Its absurd storyline involving aliens and nonsensical humor left viewers exasperated. It’s a movie that continues to annoy audiences with its mere mention.
Himmatwala [2013]:
This Sajid Khan directed remake was a disaster in all aspects. From its stale humor to its regressive portrayal of women, the film received a wave of negative reviews. It continues to be considered a blot on the history of Indian cinema. His next film, “Humshakals” could have easily trounced it, but then, one would have had to create a special category for it altogether!

Despite its successful predecessors, Race 3 was a colossal disappointment. With its convoluted plot and melodramatic dialogues, it quickly became a target for online memes and jokes, turning it into a symbol of poor cinema.

Namaste England [2018]:
Imagine a film that completely destroys the legacy of the original. You might think of many options, but “Namaste England” is probably the topper of the same. This film stands as a stark example of a film gone astray. The film faced a massive backlash from the audience and critics alike for its predictable storyline, cliched dialogues, and lackluster performances.
Thugs of Hindostan [2018]:
Boasting an impressive star cast including Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, this film was expected to be a blockbuster. Instead, its underdeveloped plot, lackluster performances, and questionable VFX made it a huge letdown. The mere mention of it brings back memories of high expectations dashed.
Kalank [2019]:
With its star-studded cast, grand sets, and promising trailers, Kalank was expected to be a blockbuster. However, an overly dramatic storyline, poor character development, and its lengthy duration left viewers disappointed. Not to forget the attempt to dehumanise the trauma of the Partition, almost justifying the genocide of millions of Hindus and Sikhs!

While Indian cinema has given us many timeless classics, it has also had its share of disastrous films. These movies serve as stark reminders of how a promising concept can go awry if not handled with care and sensitivity.
Indian cinema has its fair share of hits and misses. Some films, despite extensive promotions and high expectations, fail to strike a chord with audiences, becoming monumental letdowns. Promotion and hype can draw audiences to the theatre, but ultimately, the content dictates a film’s success. These films stand as a testament to the fact that meaningful storytelling and strong performances are what truly resonate with the audience.
