Sri Kalasthree Temple – Guide

Sri Kalasthree Temple is a famous temple situated in the town of Srikalahasti. Srikalahasti, located in Chittoor district in the southeasters state of Andhra Pradesh, is often referred to as the holy city of southeast India because it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has immense religious significance for Hindus. Srikalahasti Temple was built during the ancient Pallava period. It is believed that people who are troubled by various doshas can offer prayers at this temple for their peace. The temple represents air, one of the five elements.

History of this Temple

According to the history of Sri Kalasthree Temple, a spider, a snake and an elephant worshiped Lord Shiva in the city to attain salvation. The origin of this legend was believed by many religious believers to be a sign and hence, the Srikalahasti temple was built during the Pallava period in the 5th century. Some new structures were built at the Srikalahasti temple during the reign of the Chola Empire during the 16th century and the Vijayanagara dynasty during the 16th century.
